  1. it seems that on every long ride i do, i feel okay for the first 2 hrs, but then the next 2 hrs i feel like i have absolutely no energy. i climb hills at nearly half my typical power and things are not very fun at that point.
when i get to about 4hrs into my ride i start feeling better and better for the remainder of the ride.
i eat every 20 minutes and hydrate well.
what gives? is it mental or something? 😕

i think i also have this problem when i am not riding, like at work. i eat consistently but always seem to have a period during each day where i feel like lying down and sleeping. i also always have more energy from 8pm on at night.

what are you eating? How many carbs are you getting in your diet?

i thought you were training to be a track sprinter...?

  4. I used to have a similar problem as you in regards to having more energy from 8 at night on. I'd always be tired during the day and then come time to go to bed I'd have more energy than ever and not be able to sleep. I always seemed to have a ton on my mind when i was trying to sleep. It was common for my heart rate to be very elevated at bedtime somtimes it really alarmed me how fast my heart was beating.

To make matters worse I had to get up at 4:55 am for rowing practice. I'd usually lie in bed from about 10-12:30 at night unable to sleep. I went on like this for about 3 and a half years during college. I'd grab naps when i could but even those were hard.

With me it turned out that other areas of my life were stressing me out and making me unable to get into a sleep pattern. About a year after I graduated college I got things sorted out and got into a good routine. I found that my lack of regular sleep was affecting my performance. I got better on longer and shorter workouts. I'm guessing you arent getting adequate rest and this is messing up your long workouts from the 2 to 4 hour period.

that's where i want to head next year. but right at this moment i am still doing crits, so i try to get in a long ride for endurance.

track sprinters still do some endurance work on the road, as far as i know.

i eat a good amount, not sure exactly how many calories. i have about 5lbs excess body fat, and i am not losing it, so i can't be in calorie deficit.

to be honest, unless you're a pro doing 3 hrs plus crits, there isn't any point in riding for 4 plus hours for e.g a ~1-hr crit.

yes, track sprinters do, do some longer endurance rides, the *world class* people i work with don't do much more than 2-hrs

  8. I sometimes suffer a kind of crash during a ride. It's very uncomfortable but not quite the same as a bonk (no sexual pun intended).
Take today. I started off and did about 1 hour 40 minutes riding, some climbing, descents and flats. I felt terrific and really fast uphill. I then did my gym workout which took me about 2 hours. I ate some energy bars after. However, when I got back on the bike I got involved in a race with another rider and finally caught him up at the foot of a slight climb. Normally I really enjoy some competition but, boy, did I feel depleted. Felt like it was really hurting so I was glad the other rider took a different route after some time so I could slow my pace a little. I'd have hated to sprint uphill feeling as I did.
I wonder, though, whether the weight session may have simply used up too much gas. I managed to keep my speed around 20 mph most of the way home but my body felt like one big ache.

i guess i feel a little guilty if i don't do a long ride on the weekend. i will probally not ride more than 2.5 hrs anymore.
i was curious about those long rides that i did earlier this season.
