  1. I've gotten into a bad habit of eating a Balance energy bar at 10am and again after lunch at 2:30pm.
What other energy snacks can I eat that don't contain as much sugar? thanks, Carlton.

Oh god - what has the world come to when even a Balance energy bar is considered to be too high in
carbohydrates and not high enough in fat and protein??

    Sugar is a carbohydrate.

"Sugar" does not equal "carbohydrate." There are many carbs which are not sugars.

Welcome to the world of Atkins. Feed your body too much of one substance, starve it from another
substance and hope your body will throw away the unused portion of the first.

  5. People - I'm just looking for snacks that won't give me the sugar "lows" during the day. It's not
    that complicated.

Eat an apple in the morning and a banana in the evening.

  8. I too was going to suggest fruits. Dried ones as well.

Nuts...almonds, walnuts - taste good, are filling, no sugar high/low. And right now, they are
considered to be a good "fat" (who knows if that will be the thought next year).

Can't go wrong with fresh veggies - especially the stuff you like. Personally, I can't stand
carrots, but green peppers (eaten like an apple or in strips), tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers
frequently get tossed in as mid-day snacks.

Baked pretzels with a small container of low-fat cottage cheese (chop in some green onion, chives,
paprika & Mrs. Dash for a nice spread). Also really good with Ry Krisp krackers, which add some
    nice fiber.

If you haven't ever tried it, I'm a huge fan of TVP. This crazy stuff is Texturized Vegetable
Protein. Basically, it's the easiest way to make high protein, no/low fat spreads for veggies
    that I know.

This stuff is made by the folks at Red Roof Mill. The first time you are looking for it, go to your
local over-priced, health-food store. Once you know what you are looking for, you can probably find
it at the bigger grocery stores. It's dehydrated flakes, so you have to rehydrate it with water.
When making your lunch, put it in the microwave (per instructions on the bag).

After rehydrating it, drain off any excess liquid (or at least most of it). Add some low fat ranch
dressing mix and stir in (just add to taste). Makes a great flaky (almost meaty) spread for eating
    with veggies.

Or after rehydrating it, mix in taco mix and throw some spinach leaves in your lunch bag for mid-
afternoon taco/spinach wraps. Or mix in some rice vinegar & soy sauce and wrap it in nori with some
    cucumber and wasabi.

All right, I'm going to stop dreaming of cooking and going back to thinking about training.
    Good luck.

Yeah, I think a few of these might give him the "sugar low" he's trying to avoid.

You forgot "9. Deep-fried ferret sandwiches."

There are many ways to accomplish that. Simply eating the Balance bar in smaller chunks more
often would do that. You may want to find a list of foods listed with there glycemic<sp>
Index. The lower, or higher, the number, can't remember, the less it affects the sugar "lows"
and "highs". I just got done reading Friels "Going Long" and it has a fairly extensive list
of fruits, vegitables, etc and there GI number. I'm sure there's a list available somewhere.
