Hi, This might not be the best place to ask but I thought someone here may've had to deal with this. I'm on a strong course of antibiotics and I have to do a 12 hour enduro next saturday in a team of two. Someone mentioned that that amount of excercise might not be such a good idea on antibiotics as they stress the body out a fair bit to start with. I raced today for over two hours this morning and didn't feel the best but that could've been the lingering tonsilitus I'm taking the antibiotics for.
I told my doctor what I planned to do but I don't have the greatest faith in GPs to know everything about everything so was hoping someone might have direct experience. Any insights? Cheers, Duncan.

There's your answer. You'll feel way worse after a two man 12 hour race, have a bad day performance wise and still have lingering tonsilitus.
A bit more information, I started the antibiotics last wednesday and today there is only a trace of the tonsilitus. By next saturday there should be no more tonsilitus but I'll be just finishing the antibiotics as they must run their course.

Rest and let yourself heal up and tell your friend the truth - you're
sick.

Maybe he could do it solo and you could hand him up bottles or something.
Thanks, if I do still have a sore throat then I think I will be doing this.

The two sickest times I've ever had in my life followed exercise during an active infection.
First one was in college - continuing to run with some kind of throat infection. Wound up losing the semester and over a hundred pounds.
Second one I had the flu, got this (then new...) digital pulse meter in the mail; just *had* to try it out, ran a few miles in Jan or Feb. Wound up with pneumonia, lost over 30 pounds and incurred permanent lung damage that prevents me from riding in temps under 40 degrees F to this day.
Bad idea IMHO. My (totally untutored...) theory is that exercise while infected takes energy from your immune system and also helps spread the little buggers throughout your body. -- PeteCresswell
the only way i get over illness is exercise.. you are all irish to me.
You know what antibiotics essentially are? A mild form of chemotherapy.

but for something over that - a race, and in particular an endurance race where you are going to be in calorie deficit for a long time, running your heart at 70% of max for a long time, and generating a sload of acid in your legs, creswell is exactly right....racing when you're in recovery from something like this is a recipe for getting sicker.
many who crave being fit overdue it, not taking seriously that resting while fit permits recovery and then muscle growth and stamina growth later.
Think im agreeing here, id still do any normal excercise, and often it makes me feel better to exercise, but i dont think id race - just too much stress to expect the body to put up with. You're asking it to fight, repair and work the hardest it'll ever be asked to work all the same time.
