    "A Hermit Thrush"
    Amp Clampitt,
    from THE COLLECTED POEMS

    "Nothing's certain...

    ....unbroken music. From what source (beyond us, or
    the wells within?) such links perceived arrive--
    diminished sequences so uninsistingly
    not even human--there's

    hardly a vocabulary left to wonder, uncertain
    as we are of so much in this existence, this
    botched, cumbersome, much-mended,
    not unsatisfactory thing."

    "Polysemy is the state of being a polyseme; i.e. a word or phrase with multiple
    meanings, such as "The child started to walk." and "My mother used to dance the

    "Plotinius the Platonist proves by means of the blossoms and leaves that from
    the Supreme God, whose beauty is invisible and ineffable, Providence reaches
    down to the things of earth here below. He points out that these frail and
    mrtal objects could not be endowed with a beauty so immaculate and so
    exquisitely wrought, did they not issue from the Divinity which endlessly
    pervades with its invisible and unchanging beauty all things."

    But I have tried to write to be understandable to those who have not read
    'Steps' and therefore shall acknowledge here only depts contracted since
    'Steps' was published. Even so..."

    "Perhaps transpose is used as a noun only by mathematicians; the transpose of a
    matrix is the result of the process of transposition of the matrix; the
    two-syllable noun and the four syllable noun differ in meaning in that one is
    the result and the other is the process. Similar remarks apply to transform;
    the process is transformation, the result of the process is the transform, as
    in<A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laplace_transform"> Laplace
    transform</A><A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laplace_transform">"</A>,<A
    HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourier_transform"> Fourier transform</A>,
    etc.

    A particulary interesting case is the word protest; as a noun it has the
    stress on the first syllable, but as a verb its meaning depends on stress: with
    the stress on the second syllable it means to raise a protest; on the first it
    means to participate in a protest. This appears to result from the derived noun
    getting verbed."

  9. "Three types

    There are three varieties of this : backward vertical integration, forward
    vertical integration, and balanced vertical integration.

    • In backward vertical integration, the company sets up subsidiaries
    that produce some of the inputs used in the production of its products. For
    example, an automobile company may own a tire company, a glass company, and a
    metal company. Control of these three subsidiaries is intended to create a
    stable supply of inputs and ensure a consistent quality in their final product.

    • In forwardvertical integration, the company sets up subsidiaries
    that<A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_%28business%29">
    distribute</A><A
    HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_%28business%29">"</A> or<A
    HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketing"> market</A> products to customers
    or use the products themselves. An example of this is a movie studio that also
    owns a chain of theaters.

    • In balanced vertical integration, the company sets up subsidiaries
    that both supply them with inputs and distribute their outputs."

    Don't be ridiculous! We all know greyhounds are WAY too skinny to
    make a decent meal. Heck, they are so skinny they barely make a "thud,
    thud" sound when you run the little flea bags over. Last one I had to
    stop and backup over it a few times to even be sure I'd hit it.

    It was that drive that earned Jessica a fourth place finish in the Alpo North
    Central Regional competition last year. Undaunted by her ninth place finish in
    1998 (the top eight progress for a chance to represent the region at the World
    Finals later in the year), she worked even harder in 1999 "to make the cut."
    Her efforts were again recognized when she was invited to participate in last
    summer's Purina Incredible Dog Challenge in Chicago."
