  1. Went into the pantry cab looking for macaroni to cook for crab salad.
In search of shells, I went to the quart jar of orzo. Criminently!
Lots of black flecks in it!! Critters!! Dang. I wonder if the fact
that the date is from 2001 has anything to do with it. . . .
No, I'm NOT going to sift it and then freeze the pasta for four days to
kill anything. I'm going to contribute the contents to the local
landfill. Good thing I found the Creamette ring macs.
    For your reading pleasure. :-)

You could have still used 'em if you added poppyseeds... And maybe some
cracked pepper if it was really bad. Now you'll know for next time ;-)

Eeee-e-ew-w-w is right! boo, hiss. But there is magic.....

keep as many flour - based products as possible in the fridge. OR
pour flour based products into air tight containers (glass, plastic,
stoneware, etc (NOT those plastic zip bags for anything but short,
short term storage) and put a few whole bay leaves in with it. Amazing!
    magic!

Those little buggers are weevils and they hatch out after you get home and
store the product for a while. They don't "get into your product" -
(except for those times when everything gets infested cause the little
dears were overlooked for a few weeks to run loose).

I come from bugger land. With almost 6 months of 85 - 100 degree summers
with 80% to 90% humidity and winters (where we freeze) of 40 - 50 degrees,
we are the land of the insect. Jars with tight-fitting lids filed as
full as possible (less air inside) and 2 large bay leaves for a quart
sized jar (more as the container gets bigger), stored away from the light,
in as cool a place as possible. Stuff will keep for years and there is no
bay leaf flavor, even with loose flour. This works for all grains, like
    wheat, corn (cornmeal), etc.

    Elaine, too

Must be 'cos you're so sweet....

No ants in my house at the moment, thankfully, but I have squillions of
them outside - tiny, weeny, little black ones; middling sized black ones
and big red bull ants.I keep expecting to walk out into the backyard one
day and fall through into one of the bull ant tunnels! Occasionally we'll
be sitting in the lounge room and see one solitary bull ant walking
across the floor, but otherwise I haven't had too many problems with ants
    invading the house.

This just cracks me up - a year when I had a conference and was out of
town, coming home the day before Mother's Day - my boys (grade school)
decided to have a welcome-home picnic for me. Everything was perfect
(with my mom's help) - but the paprika on top the deviled eggs was in
slightly bigger "pieces" than it should have been - closer inspection
showed some kind of weevil shells mixed in. I never said a word (it
was too late, anyway, we'd already eaten most of them) - but it was
pretty funny. I threw out the rest of the paprika.
