eBay selling Newbie Q

understand it, Personal Accounts are basically free to use but are limited in
function (such as cannot accept credit card payments).

Ebay gets their cut in two ways. First you pay a listing fee of $1-$5
or so (depends on starting price) plus extras (multiple images, bold
type listing, featured at top of searches, etc). When the item sells
they get 5.25% up to $25, 3% of the amount above $25 and below $1,000,
and 1.5% of the amount over $1,000.

It works a little differently if you want to list at a fixed price, or
start a store, etc.

As somebody else pointed out, a "personal" account on paypal is
essentially free, but limited in ways like dollars per month transferred
(though it's up in the thousands so I have never hit it), and the
ability to receive credit card payments.

But here's the rub: it is against ebay policy to list that you accept
Paypal but exclude credit card payments. I got a couple of auctions
pulled for doing that. I was unaware of the policy, but it's listed in
here:

Oddly enough, I had two other listings that didn't get pulled. The
wording was little different, I had a bit more text between the word
Paypal and the text "no credit cards". So you can get around it if you
are creative, but you would be knowingly violating the policy.

As for the ebay fees, you can keep them low if you have a low starting
price, host your own pictures, and do not list in more than one
category. They can nickel and dime you to the poor house.

I'm getting fed up with this kind of [censored] along with Paypal freezing my
account for a week for no good reason.

Who wants to start a new auction and payment system? How can we now
that Ebay has so much market share? I think someone could come up with
a new payment system but an auction house would be difficult.

I have been selling stuff on ebay for over 7 years, and have done
hundreds of transactions. I don't take PayPal, and never have. If
someone wants your item badly enough, they will be willing to mail you
a check. It's not as fast as PayPal, but I keep more of the profit, and
I ship promptly, so everyone is happy.

Cool. Unless you are willing to do all the work for free and then pay for
other costs out of your pocket, I don't see you keeping up your new system
for very long. What sucks about paypal is that Ebay owns them and ebay
auctions are probably the primary use of the paypal, so they can make policies
that benefit one another.

I was a paypal member a while back, but no more. When wanted to get my
banking info, that's when I cut them off. They don't need to know that
information. I pay with checks, and accept checks, with no major problems.
I know that paypal would be faster, but most of the time that is not an
issue.

When my accumulated purchases finally took me to the point that Paypal
insisted I give them bank info, I opened a new account with a few bucks. I
kept it apart from any personal accounts, even a different bank.

When I pay with Paypal, I still bypass the bank account and use a credit
card - give me the points. Almost all of my purhcases exceed the amount I
keep in that bank account to hold it open.

Paypal created a hassle for me in that I had to open a new account. I
don't think anyone would give them access to real personal accounts. In
return I refuse to use it for purchases. I wonder if they'd even know if I
closed the account...?
