Cashing out of any allowances that car drivers get, eg if you are entitled to a company car including fuel, servicing etc, EBA can provide for the person to forsake the car and spend equivalent on bike, cycling clothing, tyres & tubes, bike servicing etc. Even receiving considerably less than the cost of the provision of the car would be a bonus for cyclists.

Something like say 20% of cost? Should be enough to buy a new bike as
well 🙂

Mind you, it would have to be balanced against the cost of facilities
such as lockers, showers, drying rooms, cages.

Still figure that a 5 year lease of a $30k car plus running costs
should be matched against a bike plus clothes plus serious
lighting and 3 tubes a year 🙂

Dear Euan,

I am not an industrial officer / industrial lawyer / your union.

Speak to your local peak cycling body, and your trade union.

Try to get "car allowances" for alternative users (bike / motorbike /
public transport yearly ticket).

But watch out. The Electrolux decision says that EBAs can only cover
the direct employer-employee work relationship (speak to your union
about this). Its bad law, which harms bargaining power. It is
especially bad for bicyclists because of a culture which doesn't seem
"work bike" or a bike as "essensial work transport" as equivalent to
the car allowance guff.

You can however try bargaining for bike lockers / curbs / showers /
change rooms under OH&S type provisions: adequate provision of
materials with which to work and prepare for work. Speak to your peak
body or union.

You also might find that your union sucks. Many unions aren't
particularly willing to listen to their members real demands, or let
their members control bargaining. Some unions do though. The usual
correlation is left-wing <=> militance <=> member control.

You might also be covered by extraordinary workplace laws: construction
and higher education are. Or you might work for a "public service"
(military / police / fire) where your bargaining rights are limited by
extraordinary laws. YMMV.

If your EBA is non-union then there are another whole set of problems
associated.

Come on Zebee, don't discount the perks. I was paid a $4500 allowance
to ride my pushie to work 12 years ago. Should be at least $7000 now.
