Eating Crow

Magpies in Australia are a big nuisance at nesting time.

i saw a show a month or so ago about ravens where this woman had a raven
that was a "pet". she would drive in her convertible and the bird would
fly along above her. it was one of the coolest things i've seen.

but once when i was coming back from skating, it was getting towards
evening and i noticed that there were crows EVERYWHERE. for like 4 or 5
blocks, there were crows covering every house roof and the power and
phone lines. i was afraid.

I had a bird bounce off my helmet once. It was really weird because
I could see it, or rather it's shadow, coming. The sun was straight
behind me so I could see the bird's shadow getting closer... closer...

My guess is that it was a doped up racing pigeon.

I've been attacked by magpies, thankfully not more than one at a time. They
go for your ears, which can be painful. Sometimes I could outsprint them if
a) I got enough warning and b) they weren't on EPO. But the only way to
completely avoid the attacks was to take a different road. Sometimes this
wasn't an option and I'd have to run the gauntlet each time. Thanks, Mr

i've had ducks fly very close to my head, i had to duck to avoid them
(sorry). they aren't the best flyers. saw one in a wind storm, and i
didn't know until then that ducks' faces could express the "oh [censored]!" emotion.

but pigeons are normally good at avoiding head sized objects. what kind
of bird was it, did you see? i found a chickadee on the bike trail that
had been run into or vice versa. it was laying in the middle of the
trail and its eyes were rolling around in its head 🙁 so i moved it over
into the bushes.

That's way-cool. But I can't imagine the Ravens around here being
trainable. Rather, they seem to have their own agenda, and generally don't
give a rat's tail about people (including cyclists) until you're about to
hit them. At that point they don't even bother to fly off, but just hop
away, in an almost condescending manner that says "As if we're worried about
the likes of YOU!" I have no idea who their natural enemies are, but they
certainly don't act as if they have any.

I wouldn't worry too much about crows, but if you had Ravens, particularly
the size of the birds we get 'round these parts, you'd be wise to be afraid.
Be very afraid.

Not to add to your concerns, but Ravens are also supposed to be one of the
very smartest birds. Makes you wonder what they're up to, hanging out in
the trees, powerlines, wherever.
