  1. Just wondering if anyone else has an easier time of the year to lose weight?
Summer is the hardest time for me and winter is the easiest. I don't
celebrate holidays really, due to having no family around here, so while
other people are eating tons of food, I am not, so during the months of
November-March it is easier. Too many parties in the summer and it is
    harder it seems.

Anyone else find it easier certain times of year to lose?

    Curt

  2. The last two times I started dieting were in the fall/winter, including this
time. It always seemed easiest to me, too. And then by summer, I'm
conditioned enough that I can carry on with little trouble.

    Good question.

  3. Summer is easiest for me 'cause all I want is iced tea and salads in the hot
Texas summer anyway. But this time, I started the week before Thanksgiving
and had no trouble all through the holidays. I was ready. Guess that's the
optimum time to start a diet, when you are ready. Lord knows, getting ready
    is the hardest part anyway.

Yes, winter is easier too. Summer is ever harder this year for me only
because of all of this cycling. Dating a lot make it harder, too.

    Curt,

There are some studies that show people are able to lose weight
quicker in the fall and winter. The book 'Lights out' has many
    different references to it.

The short version of the theory goes something like.. Before produce
was in the store year round (and sugar products), summer was the time
for all the new foods and to gain weight for the upcoming winter.

It's the opposite for me, because I can better hide my weight in the
winter, so there is less motivation to lose weight.

One nice thing about cycling is you can surely eat more. It is a great
exercise to say the least. I am doing a century in August! I can't wait.
Maybe I will do it on Induction levels for research? Umm, maybe not.

Hmmm, that is interesting. Maybe that is part of it, but the damn parties
are killing me. Beer is flowing a little too often. I am being pretty good
now and hope to be at my lowest weight ever soon.

  10. Quoted message said:

Curt, I would have to say that winter is easier for me too. I don't
think it is a "food" thing as much as an "exercise" thing. I find it
much easier to bust my tail (alternating strength training, aerobics &
power walking) in the cold than in the heat. Which helps me to be
movitated to eat right...because I don't want to do all that "busting"
for nothing. lol. Summertime heat just drains me and makes me feel
very unmotivated. :P ...and yet I keep going and looking forward to
cooler (less humid) weather putting the extra umph back in my step.
So, in spite of Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is still winter for me.

Winter is easiest for me, summer is the worst. Here in Central Texas the
    winters
are not too bad, but the summers can be brutal.

    I wouldn't dare....I'd die. I'm doing either a century or a metric century
    on August 7th.

Which I will do will depend on two factors: 1) how my butt feels on my new

doing the metric. Then, there is another one on Sept 18

Sounds good. I am so glad to find cycling. It is so much more fun that
running. Takes longer, but is fun and you can do some traveling around.

I need to do some longer rides soon. I haven't done a 50+ in a week or so.
Better do a couple 60's soon. I went up the steepest hill I ever rode up in
my life today. I thought I was going to break my handlebars. My bicycle
doesn't have a triple and it doesn't have a huge sprocket on the rear. I
was at a disadvantage. I made it, but it was tough. 20+ grade.

    Curt

  14. Yes, I find it harder in the summer myself.

I bought my new bike to replace my old bike, and one reason was for the
    triple chainring. I use it quite a lot. I think it's a knee-saving
device, too. There's one hill here in CT that's brutal even with the
triple. Also, I'm able to spin up hills with the triple that I'd be
really cranking up with the double.

I think summer is the easiest here in CT, as I can get out and bike a
lot. While I still bike in winter (I put studded tires on my mountain
bike), I can only bike for about 1.5 hours, max. After that, it's simply
too cold. Plus, you think people freak out when they see a biker, you
should see them as they pass you when it's 0 degrees out.

    | Anyone else find it easier certain times of year to lose?

I don't know about certain times of the year, but there are definitely
certain temperatures that I lose better.
This relates, I think, to my physical activity. Also, when it's really
cold, I'm sure I burn up more calories staying warm.

Lose most quickly: temperatures 50 - 73 degrees
Lose quickly: temperatures below 50 degrees
Lose slowly: anything over 74 degrees

Fortunately, this summer has been the coolest and least humid in the past 5
years I've lived here. Also, the weight I've already lost makes me tolerate
    warmer temperatures much easier.

I always thought it was odd when I'd hear commercials about how people
needed to lose their "winter weight" in time to enjoy the summer, because
I've generally been at my lightest weights in the winter, and heavier in the
summer when I'm staying inside to keep cool. Plus, when I'm having to
bundle up in lots of layers for very bitter cold winters, I always think
that I'm larger than I am (and therefore generally eat less) because I feel
all stuffed and round with all those extra clothes on my body.

Only 1 more month of summer to go!

Yeah, about 50 degrees is my low temp limit on riding. The wind chill at
lower temps is just too much. Riding at 0 degrees is beyoud my imagination.
