  1. This weekend I did 8 Munros without leaving the house. I had been
ticking off the Munros in my old original copy of the SMC's Munro book
and my total was sitting at 258. So 26 to go. However on adding up the
unticked Munros there were only 18 left in the book. I had forgotten
that the book did not include the 'new 8' all of which I have done. So
my real Munro tally is 266.
    18 to go

    4 x Strathfarrar
    4 x Mullardoch---------one trip in May?

3 x boring lumps at Glenshee
    1 x Carn Bhac----------one trip

    2 x Something above Corrour Lodge-Beinn Eibhin/Aonach Beag?---- this
weekend from Laggan? In out before dark on Saturday??

1 x Beinn Bhuidhe near Inverary
1 x Ben Mhor-(Mull)-------a trip to the West

    2 x Fannichs ---finish !

Trouble will be fitting them in with club meets, the wife and of course
    the weather.

  2. There is no rush. They will always be there. You then need a new
challenge. I am on my fourth round of Munros and second round of
Corbetts but don't feel there is any challenge left, well not at the
moment. Just take your time and enjoy them.

Do each of them by a route you haven't done before. Could be
interesting on some of the Cuillin peaks, or the Cobbler ;-)

There are over 2630 tops over 2000' with 100' drop on all sides in
Britain. (Dawson et al,2004 Graham Tops TACIT)

More than enough challenge and the Highland ones are often unmarked
and little visited (other than the Munros and some of the Corbetts) I
enjoyed the unremarkable Meall Breac above Loch Rannoch on Saturday
(802m) before popping up two of the local Munros.

I did this pair last year from the north. Used a bicycle for the track
from Loch Laggan as far as the ruin at Lubvan. This was such a simple
trip, I'm suprised it isn't mentioned more.

So which one will you choose for your last ? .....

From your remaining few I would probably choose An Soccach at the end of
Mullardoch. However if one of the remaining fannichs was A' Chailleach (with
its splendid views into fisherfield) I may have to toss a coin!

Ahh the conservatism of guidebooks and hill routes.

Possibly the desire to get all four done in one bash may have
    something to do with it.

I have also done this group from the North. Walked in from Loch Laggan via
the pass between Chlachair and Pitridh then onto the ridge, wild camped
after Carn Dearg then finished the remaining three of the next day before
walking out via Lubvan. Nice little circuit with a touch of remoteness
    thrown in!

Did you remember to subtract the one that was demoted from the old
    list? :-)

    Guidebook, what guidebook? :-)

I did all 4 from Loch Lagan (Beinn Eibhinn, Aonach Beag, Geal Cairn and
Carn Dearg) on an abolutely glorious winters day in February 1980. Blue
skies, crisp snow, no wind to speak of and the hills all to myself. I
only had to put my crampons on once. Just for a steep descent somewhere
along the ridge, probably the ridge above Loch Coire Cheap. My best
winter day ever. ISTR it was about 20 miles.

    Repeats - 6 (Marilyns 1, Sweats 2, Wainwrights 6, Outlying Fells 0)

If the same amount of fresh snow falling in Fife is also falling on the
Central Highlands the going will be slow at the weekend and I begin to
doubt that I will manage Beinn Eibhinn and Aonach Beag from Laggan in
one still relatively short day :-((
As it is for the first time in two years I failed to get to work in
Crieff this morning as the minor roads north through Glen Devon were
drifting badly and after passing my third car off the road I decided to
give it up as a bad job and go home to bed before the roads became
totally blocked by the snow which was still falling heavily.

One in the Mamores wasn't it?

    Yes, Sgurr an Iubhair.

I like that hill. Ridges meeting, views 3 ways etc etc etc

Anyway it's difficult not to do it if you're doing a circuit
    in the Mamores.

Same with all the recently promoted ones - I found that I'd done all
the new ones and the demoted one, just because they all form parts of
    natural routes.

There are a couple I can think of immediately that are far more worthy
of demotion - the one at the end of the long spur leading from Cruach
Ardrain, and the lower of the two adjacent ones at the eastern side of
    the Monadh Liath.

Hardly something they could state explicitly, though.

  18. distinct hill. When climbed from the south it feels like one

    too.

I assume you're then talking about the hills above Newtonmore (Monarch
of the Glen and all that). I can't remember all the names either but
all 3 (there were once 5) on that circuit can be done without much
additional strain. If anything the hop to the furthest one is the
easiest. But then again we lose about 100 Munros if we apply the
    500' rule.

Would lose none because they would not be Munros....

Thats another way of looking at it - thanks to Dawson and Hewitt...

Just forget about them anyway.. Whats the big deal about 3000'?

My cut off in the Highlands is 900m which gets me to some nice places

Just something to aim at. It's one of a number of lists and you chose
any or none of them. What's the big deal about any others?
