  1. I figured the people in this group would have ideas about
this. I love to swim but I keep getting ear aches. I didn't
used to get them but now I do. I tried ear drops and they
work once you have the infection but they are expensive. The
active ingredient in the drops was vinegar (some kind of
acid but it is the scientific name for vinegar). But that
burns my ears. It gets rid of the infection but burns. My
doctor said to dry them with a hair drier. I did but it
doesn't work all the time. Someone suggested alcohol -- they
said not rubbing but something like vodka. Too many
suggestions. I figured you guys would have figured this one
out by now. Any experience with this? Thanks, Paul

First, have the doctor look at your ears to see if the ear
canals are normal. Some people, such as myself, have 50%
closed ear canals from outdoor watersports.

After many years, here is what works for me. Half-alcohol
and Half-Vinegar drops in my ears after swimming without
fail. But I only swim every other day.

If my ear seems close, I put in ear wax remover by following
the directions on the stuff. Water jet cleanup follow
    through, etc.

I try to be very careful about not taking away too much ear
wax since this leaves me vulnerable to an ear infection.

I press my neck glands to test for signs of infection. If
so, I put a very little bit of vinegar on a tiny piece of
cotton and wrap that in more cotton and then put it in my
ear. This usually only takes a day. I also supplement with a
hair dryer as often as convenient.

I have an open prescription for antibiotics for my ear, but
doing the above, I have used the meds for years.

We do. Go to Google's Advanced Groups Search, at
    google.comadvanced group search, and
search for the exact phrase "ear infection", to get about
    36,000 responses.

  4. Isopropyl Alcohol is usually fine. If you are getting
Infections, I suggest you get them to check their Total &
Free chlorine levels in their pool.

Otherwise, unless any of us are Doctors, it is best to speak
to a Dr. or two and get their suggestions.

  5. Thanks, but I guess the reason I posted here was so that
people could tell me what they have found that works. I can
do and have done searches before, I also have heard lots of
different opinions, I wanted actual, practical experience
from the people who have encountered this first hand. Didn't
really want 36,000 articles, most of which will have nothing
to do with what I am looking for. Probably most people, when
going to a specialized group will be looking for a
specialized bit of information and not a shotgun. But thanks
anyway. The above post by Gleshna was just what I was
    looking for.

  6. Are there any downsides to using ear plugs? I used to
wear them, but it was a bit of a hassle, so I stopped.
Haven't experienced any problems since, however, apart
from the occasional puddle lodged in the ear for a while
    after swimming.

  7. I even tried ear plugs but they don't really work. Nice
concept but they don't really work out in reality.

    Try searching the specialized group.
