I just got my bike back from the shop today having replaced my Ulegra shifters and rear derailleur with Dura Ace. It seems to me there is an extra click when gearing up to my smallest cog ( 12 ). Then there is a teensie click and a click when going back from 12 to 13. And yes of course I make it all the way up to my 25. Could it be that Shimano is already delivering the ten speed? If so does this have any implications on my shifting? The current cassette is Ultegra 12-25 and the chain is DA. It doesn't feel that it is shifting too good at the moment. I have to trim a lot in the middle of the cassette.
My flight deck is also giving erraneous readings on the cogs, sometimes no reaction and sometimes showing the wrong cog. I opened the connection in the shifter and cleaned it plus bent the small film with the connectors on it to make sure they were in contact. Could this have anything to do with DA ten speed? It worked fine with my Ultegra nine speed and the settings are still intact.

Doubt it. The DA 10s shifters are a completely new shape and length...not a converted 9s shifter.
Also if it indeed was a 10s shifter, it would not shift 9s spacing...10s cogs much closer together.

Thanks, yes this would have been too good to be true. While looking into the problems again we just found out that the shop had set everything up real sloppy. After readjusting the wires everything worked nicely again. I upgraded from Ultegra to DA after a crash, otherwise I would have waited for the ten speeds.

I 'upgraded' to Campy 10 from 9 and you really don't get much. A 13/26 x 9 doesn't have an 18t cog but who misses that. There's little practical difference between a 9sp 13/28 and a 13/29 x 10 sp.
Moving to 10 sp with Campy 9 is not costly. I think the change will be very dear with Shimano.

Looking forward to actually seeing a '10s' shimano rear hub to see if a 9s will go onto it, and a 10s cassette will go onto a DA '9s' rear hub..
Hope it will but I remain skeptical..too bad shimano won't give us an answer on the phone, I am sure they have gotten the 'brief' on 2004 DA but they just won't say. By them not saying the 10s will go onto the 9s hub, makes me think it will not. I think they are afraid of them not selling anymore DA 9s stuff...like that happened with XTR in late 2002...
* オチョコ, the quantity being the same as 9 speed free hubs FH-7700, guarantees the side rigidity of the wheel. * Free you use the aluminum for the body, actualize super light weight. * 10 speed exclusive uses * Front as for hub all the hole radial group correspondences * Rear free hub weight /266g (anti- 7700 series: -46g) * Front hub weight /122g (anti- 7700 series: +3g)
Interesting. Rear hubs and wheels are "10 speed only", yet the dish is the same as for 9s. Unless they mean amount of dish reduced by moving in the left flange, or they've somehow managed to make the body/casette extend farther to the right without interfering with the stays, that's hard to reconcile. Interesting also to get conformation that 10s will have the same spacing as 9s. That at least means you can gradually upgrade, and you don't have to do all at once.

Perhaps in true Microsoft style thay have just changed the spline pattern on the freehub. Can anybody tell from the pictures?
This would keep them the exclusive supplier of Shimano 10 speed hubs and cassettes at least for a while until the aftermarket retools and maybe pays royalties for the privilege.

I was thinking that the largest cog hangs lower on the cassette body and the cogs and spacers are narrower.

The smallest sprocket will be an 8t that screws into the inside of the cassette body. :-)

Gosh, I wonder what "10s will have the same spacing as 9s" means. What do you think? Do you suppose that means the cogs and spacers are a) narrower or b) the same width? -- David Damerell <[email hidden]> Distortion Field!

Very specifically, a Shimano rep. gave a presentation at a bike club meeting and said that you'd need everything new for 10 sp DuraAce.
I guess there will be a buyers market for 9spd in the near future. Good thing too, I want to build up another bike in the near future and I will need some 9spd parts. ----------------- Alex __O _-\<,_ (_)/ (_)

Hmmm. Maybe they've been having lots of calls for <11 cogs, and have decided to make 10s the same style as that new system they just intro'd for folding/miniature bikes where the rightmost 2 or 3 cogs go on a much reduced diameter spline.

Well, I don't think many thirdparties make freehub bodies in the first palce do they? Most aftermarket wheels I see have original Shimano freehub bodies on the 3d part hub. Cassettes, yeah, but how long would it take to add a spline pattern, especially for a thirdparty that's already doing Shimano and Campy? Besides, with the two-last-cogs-on-a-carrier-and- sticking-out trick, most third parties probably can't do that yet anyway.

The last 2 cogs are usually not a problem. The stop can be used to adjust the spacing. The larger cogs can shift well and still be off on spacing. My Campy 9, splined together larger cogs, work fine in a 10 sp system.
