  1. I have heard that DA's BB is not sealed, so it has to be cleaned on a regular basis, especially if riding in the rain. Is the 2004 DA any better?

  2. All Shimano BB's are cartridge bearing sealed ....... have been for years, unless something has changed for this year ......

  3. Actually, the 9 speed Dura Ace Bottom Bracket is not sealed and must be serviced regularly. That's why many use the Ultegra BB instead.

The 2004 D/A is compatible with the 9 speed. It is a completely different design and combines the BB with the crank arms. So, if you do go with the new design, you must replace the cranks as well. But, the new design is lighter, stiffer and should be less maintenance.

    Ferg

  4. Interesting .... thanks for the info.

Back in my day as a mechanic, all Shimano was sealed ..... 😉

  5. I just finished building a bike with Ultegra/Dura Ace. I used DA STI and derailleurs. But my LBS mechanic suggested to use Ultegra BB instead of DA....and I believe it was for this same reason.

  6. True the DA BB is not sealed, HOWEVER it is MUCH lighter (+/- 75 Grams) and I get apx. 2k miles on my DA between repacks. I keep an Ultegra BB for winter riding.

So the 2004 DA BB is not sealed?

And do the 2004 DA shifters work with the ultegra BB?
