Nice alternative, especially if you use dumbells heavy enough, but they are
more like deadlifts than squats, that is if you use them by hanging them to
your side. -

This is what I did before switching to a gym where I could use a barbell to
squat and deadlift. I still do dumbbell lunges though.--

Better than straps are hooks. I bought some "hookers" (not the fun kind
either) from bodybuilding.com. The hook holds onto the weight just fine and
it's easier than dealing with straps, IMHO.
