Dumb question re shifters - help!

You obviously don't. 🙄

the left hand is for the front derrailleur and the right for the rear. The small lever on the right moves your gears down while the brake lever moves them up to a lighter/higher gear. Bottom line the lever move from right to right to left. Its pretty simple.

Assuming you are buying it from a shop,and assuming it's populated by something above nose picker,have them show you. New bikes also come with owners manuals.
