Dumb question about bicycle adverts.

Pedals are a very individual choice. On many top end bikes they are not shipped with pedals so that
the rider can pick their own.

For the conspiracy theorists, bikes are shipped with out pedals so that the greedy bike industry can
separate us from more hard earned dough.

I tend to believe the that the first option is more true.

Most people buying a decent bike choose to put their fav set of clipless pedals on the bike. Just
like you never see the bike with a computer on it.

IIRC, they used to come with pedals before pedals morphed into dozens of different designs.

well if this is true why put seats on bikes? Am i alone in always putting another seat on my new
bike purchase???

This is a good point. I don't think you are alone but then again it is much more likely that you can
use the original saddle that comes with a bike. Look at the risk of including pedals. I think it
used to be more common even a few years ago but I will bet that if any bike retailers answer this
thread, they will tell you that they *always* ended up taking the pedals off for credit.

Good point.

I also imagine that it is a major pain for shops to keep the cleats handy until the bike
is sold too.

Yep, and dealers got fed up accumulating a huge collection of cheap pedals from new bike purchasers
who swap them out, and they can't sell them.

I wonder also if, since pedals are such an emotional issue with some ("Pedal x rocks! All other
pedals SUCK!", kind of thing) that the manufactures are hesitant to put any one type on the bike,
lest they lose a sale from an infuriated potential buyer.

Also, I've noticed little plugs for and against the new Shimano SPD-L pedals in the TdF coverage.
When Lance did his cyclocross thing, Bob Roll commented on how the new cleats made it possible for
Lance to run onto the tarmac without slipping.

Today, we got to hear Jonathan Vaugers suggest the difficulties Lance was having with his right
pedals was down to his SPD-L. :-) (JV is a Speedplay user).
