I have a perfectly good shop pump. I am not one to "throw out the baby with the bath water."
I am also tired of screwing of the brass adaptor every day.
Please help a curmudgeonly old miser.
I got a Topeak Smarthead upgrade package (pump head, hose and pump adapters) from Performance on
sale at their local store for like $8. I think I've seen it at performance.com as well as
coloradocyclist.com.
Not only does it switch effortlessly between the presta valves on my road bike and the schrader
valves on my trike, it is great for topping off car tires, even on wheels with really short valve
stems that barely stick out beyond the hub caps. The pump head is L-shaped which makes it work
better than any other bike pump I've tried to use on a car tire.
Works great on my Blackburn TP-3 (using an included adapter), whose twist head wouldn't work with
Presta valves. To Blackburn's credit, when I sent them an e-mail asking about where I could buy a
rebuild kit--a LBS that used to sell them no longer carries them, and neither does any other LBS
apparently--Blackburn sent me a whole hose+pump head assembly without regard to how long I had
owned the pump.
