Hmmm. The cops did a sweep around my local area a few weeks
ago and netted some sophisticated setups too. Amongst them
were the local Plumber, a couple of my regulars in the bar
and a local farmer. The local farmer was reasonably well-off
    - now we know why.

The plumber has been sent to jail for two years and his
property has been seized. He had a hydroponics unit and had
USD$250 000 worth growing there. It seems a shame that he
spent so much time doing that because there is high demand
for a good plumber in our area and he wasn't often
available. In fact I was having to nag at him to complete
some work for me. It'll never be finished now :-(

From what I've seen, growing dope to 'make ends meet' is not
ever a very good excuse. If the same guys spent as much time
and effort on legal activities as they do on illegal ones
they'd be financially sound and wouldn't need to grow and
sell the stuff. It's more about greed and, if you don't
think that you'll get caught, good easy money.

My take on it is, it sucks that my (our) taxpayer money is
being wasted on sting operations against -- get this --
    people growing plants!

Were these people caught torturing puppies? Sneaking drugs
into people's food? Cheating on their taxes? No. They were
    caught ... growing plants.

    Jesus H. Christ.

Another point to ponder -- if pot weren't illegal, it would
likely be a lot less profitable, and your plumber might have
actually been available for his day job. Maybe.

With the confiscation laws that we have I think that
it might turn into a profitable little operation for
    the police.

It seems to me that people only get into trouble with it
when they are involved in growing it on a large scale, or it
turns up when the police search them while investigating
    other things.

True. Maybe. Personally, I'm pretty neutral about the whole
pot debate. Professionally I could do without it as it
causes problems at work. There's the usual big debate from
time to time over here to decriminalise pot and treat it as,
what would you call it?, a misdemeanour with instant fines
but no permanent criminal record. As it is I'm happy with
the status quo. I work in a cafe and bar and when you mix
dope and alcohol together you can get some interesting
situations that I'd rather not have to deal with. Most
people handle it OK, but only a week ago I had a guy that
got so off his nut all he could say was "...gugh..." and
wander zombie like around the bar knocking tables over and
pissing people off before we escorted him to his room -
where he wouldn't stay. Not to mention the people that
simply don't like secondhand pot smoke and it's
implications. I'm happy with something that helps keep it
out and away from my establishment as much as possible.

Anyway, that's a whole 'nother debate. Still a shame that
someone that did well with the biking ended up getting
    caught supplying drugs.

I totally agree. Seems like a big waste of resources. It
pisses me off that I pay for that when education is so

Lots of things are bad with heavy drinking, which I think is
more likely to cause problems than most other popular
intoxicants. That also doesn't sound like stoner behavior.
It would be much more likely for someone to mix pot with
their booze and go home to make a pizza and sleep instead of
goingout to make trouble. That's much more like coke/meth
with alcohol behavior from my observations.

It is a shame no matter what your views. Also even though I
disagree with the laws, I know thay are the laws. It's a big
risk to have such an operation that people know thay are
taking. A bad idea for sure. He'll be living with the

What makes you think he's making ends meet with them?

You'd be surprised just how much pot one, and a "few" good
friends, can ingest. My best friend's dad used to have two
55 gal plastic trash cans delivered (approx every month),
jam packed with buds. And yes, he dealed, but a lot of it
was personal use. Not to mention, we were popular in Jr.
High (hehehe), and the first kids in our hood to own one of

See, all that pot smoking at a young age didn't adversely

There's no doubt that heavy drinking causes problems and is
a pain in the [censored] to deal with. At least here we have
fairly strict liquor laws and it's relatively easy to
control the consumption and level of drunkeness in a well
run bar. True enough, most just mellow out on the dope - but
not everyone especially if it's a party atmosphere. Having
to deal with intoxicated people is bad enough but add drugs
to it and there's whole other dimension. That includes the
reactions of the other customers and the reputation it
brings to the place. I'm not talking about the social
consequences or ethics or the effects on the community in a
wider sense; I'm just talking about working in a bar late at
night :-) (Don't get me started on the other drugs like e
    and crystal meth! )

Sorry. It was dope. But one hell of a lot of it. He was only
in town for the night and got hanging out with some locals
that I know well and who only ever smoke dope. They headed
out back (beer garden with benches and seating around back)
and smoked up large. This guy apparently sucked it down like
he was a drowning man gasping for breath. Result? Alcohol +
lotsa pot = brain tried emergency shutdown but forgot to
    tell his body.

I agree, but unfortunately those small-time growers can
still have their assets seized and children taken away on

The way the laws are designed you're better off (legally

Hard to get worked up about this when Meth and Meth labs are
a huge problem in the Four Corners area, not only for the
users, but for the general public who occasionally run into
the disposed kits. Perhaps this was the focus of the bust,
but turned out to be something else. I wish they would focus
