Drop bar tape on mtb bars

It's been done... a lot of weight-weenie mtbers have been replacing grips with tape for some time now to save a few grams (as well as removing their star-fangled expansion nuts in their headsets)... If you've got smaller hands, it could even be mre comfortable. Doesn't cost you much to try! And anybody who laughs clearly doesn't have a clue and is more concerned about what other people thank what is comfortable or effective.

I like it as an idea. The only issue I can think of is how you're going to
sort the tape at the end of the bar ends without bar plugs.

I've done it, it was great, used a very tight wind to get a nice thick grip. I also extended the grip inwards from my brakes. No
one laughed at me any more than usual.
The problem I had was with tight scrubby single track (I have very wide Salsa Pro-Moto bars) which ripped the tape a lot so I went
back to rubber grips.

The bar ends came with bar plugs, but I can always use electrical tape. I have no shortage of that 🙂

If you want to keep on using grips try Oury grips. I've found them to be
much more comfortable and more hard wearing than the standard types of
grips.

Yes, have done this on my bar-ends. It's not stupid, and any who laugh at it
are not worth knowing. You can also use that cool patterned tape if you
like, to give a good effect.

I've found a good strategy to secure the tape end, where a bar plug was not
practical, has been to use zip-ties.

Do bar ends usually have plugs? I thought they were sort of solid ends.
