Built like a gorilla. Short legs and long body. Actually, it was one
of two made for and issued to a former world champ before the Sydney
olympics. He didn't get selected and this one never got used. It's a
happy coincidence that it fits me. I bought it in October 2001. It
originally had DuraAce fitted. I got them to replace that with 2002
Chorus. I got a very good deal :-)

Oh yeah. I almost forgot. It has had another ex world champ bum on it.
John Nicholson took it for a lap round the Hawthorn velodrome a couple
of years ago. It's been blessed :-)

You bet. The owner of the C50 was riding his spare bike today. A Look
KG381. He got rid of the 9 speed DuraAce late last year and replaced
it with 10 speed. So now he can compare Record and DuraAce. I've also
taken the Look for a ride. Very comfortable. But it felt too soft for
me. Still a nice bike :-)

Really? I've never seen him on a bike. He always seems enthused
about riding (he's patient enough to coach the likes of me on the
track!) but he doesn't appear to ride a lot.. maybe he's training in
secret? :-)

I wonder how many champs of that level stop riding once they are no
competing any more? It's almost a little sad.. I'd hate to think I go
sick of riding from racing too hard or too much, etc. Not that it woul
ever happen with me, but you get the idea

Talking about Scapins and weight and breaking ...

I've just seen a bent one. It _was_ an S8. I haven't checked the
latest prices, but the predecessor of the S8, the EOS7, was about
$5,000 for frame and forks. This one was equipped with 2004 Record +
FSA carbon cranks and Campag Eurus wheels. It seems that the
pickup/sender for the Polar computer/HRM got nudged into the front
wheel spokes at about 35km/h. Abrupt stop with about 3 spokes left
intact. Rider does a face plant and gets 4? stitches in his chin. The
down tube folded about 15cm back from the head tube and the top tube
folded in sympathy.

But, given the size of the frame (61cm? 63cm? Big anyway), the rider
has the be about 90Kg. The WoundUp forks (same as mine - I said they
were strong:-)) appear to be OK. Carbon fibre structures tend to break
rather than bend, and these are not broken. I would have expected a
break at the crown where the CF steerer joins the alloy crown casting.
Also, he was using Campag Eurus wheels. I wouldn't have thought they
were strong enough to support a rider that size. The spokes are paper
thin and there aren't very many of them.

I read an anecdote about this in a book on the history of
the TdF:

At the time this system of double-cogs was the
only gearing. Supposedly someone who new the terrain would
jump off and flip the rear wheel around to obtain a better
ratio for the conditions. Of course, as soon as someone
started this, everyone else would jump off and do the same.

The trick was that they only pretended to spin the wheel around,
and actually replaced it back the way it was before stopping.
Everyone has changed to an inappropriate gear, and the protagonist(sp?)
races off grinning!

Really?! If my Polar sender got caught in the spokes, I'm sure the uni
would simply be ripped off the fork, or the plastic body smashed t
bits... having said that, I'm not about to test it out given the chanc

You should check out Campag Eurus wheels. 16 bladed spokes on the
front wheel. And they're much smaller than, say, Ksyrium spokes.
