Was browsing the usa-swimming website when I was supposed to be working ... Came across some very
interesting quotes regarding exhaustive analysis that was performed on all swimmers at the Olympic
Trials for Sydney. This is relatively old ground for this user group, but it's interesting to see it
spelled out based on a thorough statistical analysis.

THE QUOTE BELOW IS FROM THE DATA ON FEMALE FREESTYLE EVENTS.
"While the above findings were the only significant results, we can make some general observations
about the women's freestyle events. First, stroke rate seems to be the factor that correlates most
highly with speed in the distance events (400 and 800). Athletes with the higher stroke rates
performed better. Interestingly in the sprint events (50 and 100), while no significant results were
found, trends show DPC to be more important. Stroke rates essentially were equal between the three
test groups during the sprint events, but DPC was consistently lower in the semifinalist and OTP
groups. The 200 freestyle seems to be a "transition event," where there does not seem to be a
consistent trend in the SR and DPC data.
Potential Implications:
Distance swimmers should emphasize stroke rate in training, as this variables was most highly
correlated with speed. Sprinters, conversely tend to have high stroke rates already and should focus
on developing DPC. In the 200 freestyle, athletes will most likely have to focus on SR or DPS,
depending on whether they are coming from a distance or sprint background."

"These results suggest that there are slight differences in what works for women and men in
freestyle swimming. Like the women, speed seems to be more closely tied to distance per stroke cycle
in the sprint events (50 and 100) for the men. Stroke rates in these events were very consistent
among groups, but lower DPCs were noted in the semifinalist and OTP groups. Again, as was seen in
the women's 200, we see that there are no clear trends, and DPC and SR need to be emphasized
equally. The distance events are where we see differences from the women. While speed in the women
seemed dependent on being able to maintain higher SRs, in the men, speed again seems to be more
highly correlated to DPC. While stroke rates tended to be higher in the OTP group, DPCs were
significantly lower.
Potential Implications:
Across all distances, men should focus on developing DPC in freestyle. In the sprint events, DPC
needs to be developed while maintaining SR. In the distance events, the data suggests that DPC can
be developed with some loss in stroke. In the 200, both SR and DPC need to be emphasized to maximize
performance."
