Virenque really does deserve more respect. The polka-dot jersey gets a lot
of attention and tv time and if it was so easy to win, the other teams
would love to get their hands on it.

Virenque has consistently won stages in the past 3 tours, 7 in all, when
plenty of big names would love to win just 1. Mayo, Hamilton, and Heras
came into this year's tour with a lot of talk and a whole team behind them
and all dropped out without even one good showing. Virenque at the age of
34 is still getting it done. I mean he has been on the attack constantly
and it's not like they're just letting him win cause he's French. He
dropped Merckx on the first breakaway, Rasmussen last week, and even
outlasted Moreau and Simoni today despite the toll of his previous efforts.
And he's still holding onto top 20 on GC. He is the king of the mountains,
and he simply looks good when he's dancing on those pedals...

Yeah, but don't you think a couple dozen others riders (Rubiera, Landis,
Azaevado) could win it if they weren't interested in team matters. Let's
be honest, he rides for himself.

Any jersey winner rides for himself except for maybe the white
jersey -- McEwen, Virenque, Voekler and Armstrong.

And none of those guys will ever get a stage win (minus the TTT) while
they're with Postal. Virenque's team (most other teams, really) have a
different approach to the tour. Postal's is ALL for ONE. I prefer to see
guys in breakaways, sprinters, climbers, and everyone else mixing it up.
Postal's approach is successful, but just plain boring.

The sprint between him and Gibo at the top was one of the highlights of
today's stage I thought. They both wanted that cash/prestige badly! Nice to
see Simoni get it. He hasn't done *that* badly this year, despite what he
says.

He's in the top 35 in the world for climbers, 34 positions behind Lance I'd say.

I also liked it. He didn't even look at Virenque and hardly changed
expressions while he outsprinted him. I would have liked to have
seen Virenque trying the same stuff as with Mancebo, he might have
ended up flying into a ravine, or worse, did you check out Simoni's
teeth? That guy doesn't need transfusions to do blood doping.

The main group of guys who -could- win the polka dots are mostly busy
concentrating on their overall postions in GC. Virenque is essentially the
only guy out there whose entire focus is on that jersey. The way the Tour
is raced right now sort of precludes any of the GC guys from winning enough
of the early climbing points to get the jersey away from Dicky.
