---I'm not too surprised with Jacobs testing positive, she's been raising eyebrows for years now. It
makes you wonder just how long this steroid has been around...she's 40 now, years past when most
people slow down dramatically. Maybe this has already been going on for 4-6 years??? Her indoor
record was certified the same day as the drug bust came out. I wonder if they will find a way to
strip it from her now, they should. Personally I think if you are EVER busted for drugs, all your
records should be erased. Boulami set a steeplechase record only months before he was banned for

Sorry, I dont consider a cheater be an athlete. No difference in my mind than Rosie Rusz who used
the subway to "win" the NY marathon.

I am totally with you on this one. Take away the Olympic and World Championship medals too.
Right now the price for getting caught in way too low compared to the possible benefits derived
    from cheating.

You may be right, although I sincerely hope you're not. This is the real tragedy of all this
business with drugs, though - it immediately makes people (for understandable reasons) question
anyone's achievement. Anyone who does particularly well will then be treated not as an outstanding
athlete who has conquered the world, but as a likely cheat. It's so sad.

  7. I doubt if Paula will test positive - she's been so insistant about storing her blood samples to be
tested at any future date for any newly traceable substances that she'd have to be a total moron to
think she could get away with anything in the long term. Judging from her level-headed,
down-to-earth live interviews, neither does she appear to have the kind of psychotic need for
supreme performance that drives some athletes to improve their times by using supplements. I have a
feeling that she doesn't use cocktails of supplements at all (have I read this somewhere?). Jonathan

She filters out the offending substances, and in some cases uses "clean blood" from someone like
myself, who she's asked several times to donate.

Most elites run their best marathons when they are "fairly new at running that distance".

She is absolutely, without question, NOT running 2:15 on Wheaties and training alone.

There will always be those that cheat and taint the sport but I hope
I/ we never get so skeptical we make blanket statements such at this.

But who knows if she will ever test positive. Geb never has. Flo Jo never did. El G never has.
Michael Johnson never did. Marita Koch never did. Jarmilla never did...

Does this negate the previous negativity or are you really saying they have yet to be caught? Never
    mind, rhetorical.

So are you suggesting that anyone who has stood out above the rest of the field in athletics in
recent years was probably cheating and just wasn't caught?

Does anyone have any data on how much improvement is possible with various forms of doping? Or, to
put it another way, if Regina Jacobs could run 4:00 for 1500 on steroids (say), could she run 4:05
    clean? 4:10?

How do you know? What's the rationale behind your "absolutely". Any "absolutely" worth its salt has

You might wish to take a look at Female marathon WRs throughout the past 25 years, as well as PR's
best times until her recent Flo-Jo-like transformation from very very good runner to Not Of This
    Earth Superwoman.

    Quoted message said:

    I'm sure you'll get it.

---Actually, she started out running awesome marathons. We have no previous ones to compare to. And
her 10k, while a decent improvement, is not out of this world. She was moving up to world best
before her big marathon breakthrough. The women's marathon records are like the 4 min mile. Once
some mental block is broken, all of a sudden people rush through the door. People wouldn't believe a
4 min miles was possible until Bannister, then within the year 3-5 more people did it. The 2:20 for
women was a big barrier, then it was broken twice within weeks. Radcliffe now runs 2:17-2:15, look
for some Japanese to follow her suit within just a few years. If Radcliffe is dirty, she's also very
stupid to freeze her blood for future testing as new tests arise. They could go back and scan her
for THG now if they wanted to. Andy Hass

  18. I don't think steroids would benefit a distance runner like Radciffe much, if any at all. The weight
gain would almost certainly slow them down. I cannot recall a marathoner ever in a steroid scandal.
