I hold that an event can occur whether or not it is generally recognised as having occurred. The
absence of consensus on the 'facts' of an event do not, to my mind, preclude the possibility that an
event existed and that it had a measurable impact upon its environment. The mere fact that these
measurements were not recorded does not, per se, disqualify that event from history, nor should the
fact that events will occur in future without observation or comment mean that their existence
should be denied. They're unobserved and unrecorded, that's all.
Caring is not essential to the existence of a scandal. The scandal exists even if no-one cares. Do
deny it its existence is to argue that the clouds are not in the sky because no-one looks at them.
We are touched by their shadow as surely as we are changed by the moral values of the acceptance of
drugs in sport. So, yes, it's still a scandal even if no-one cares.
