I agree with you, Martin, and find your remarks enlightening.

The "discussion about stroke length" will undoubtedly remain unresolved long after Palestinians,
Arabs and Jews are happily hugging one another in the Mideast.

Not so much a problem for me (obviously, since I am inclined to participate now and then) - but more
a principle thing. I just think that usenet is topic-driven for many good reasons, and filters are
there to be used exactly as you describe - but not for screening topics that are more appropriate
elsewhere. I acknowledge that this is a more comfortable environment than most for political
discussion, but I believe our days of "playing nice" are numbered should it become known to the
general usenet citizenry that we're more of a rec.sport.swimming_and_politics group. Just my .02.

Is it a problem? No. Is it irritating to have 30 new posts in my favourite newsgroup, and 29 of them
to be something i'm not all that interested in, Yes.

By no means do i care what you talk about on this newsgroup within reason, however its just getting
cluttered and repetitive. I don't want to ignore the thread, because occassionally, (the string
"Larry!" being a case in point), it changes to something that i want to read.

Another irritating point is when the subject starts to turn towards flaming.
