It's got to be a hoax. Shift while inserting a CD has long been a documented way of not doing
AutoPlay, eg inserting a CDRom so that it doesn't load up the starting program.
And of course autoplay can be disabled with a system setting anyway.

It's not a hoax. There are CD's out there that are copy protected, but if you hold the SHIFT key
down when you put it in, you bypass the protection.
I just ran into the irritating world of the music protection. I tried MusicMatch's new service of
buying individual songs for 99¢. I can play them on my PC, but they won't load to my portable MP3
player because they are secure WMA files. You also can't create an audio CD out of them. So
basically, I bought some songs that I can't do anything with.
(Newer portable players may work, but I haven't confirmed that yet, and I don't appreciate having to
buy a new player just for these songs.)
