So do you spray the vinegar at the dog or the owner?

but the owners are the ultimate source of the problem.

The mail carriers and meter readers I know have given up on sprays. Many dogs on their routes have
been sprayed so many times they recognize the bottles and the action of reaching for them as the
first move of an aggressive intruder (you) and they will instantly defend their territory and safety
with unbelievable frenzy in order to prevent being hurt again by the spray.

These folks are now using a variety of electronic devices. They are available from various mail
order and local shops that specialize in law enforcement and other uniformed trades. Sorry, I don't
know which units they use but the Letter Carriers' Union (whatever it's called) actually endorses at
least one such device. wonder if there is a Web site for them? dunno

I really like the ammonia idea.

Personally, I carry a small freon-powered air horn. It is strapped under the seat and can be reached
easily. the AirZound horn is more practical since the button is easily located in your bike's
cockpit. The blast of sound hits a dog's hearing system so hard they don't know where it's coming
from so you're not targeted as the source of discomfort. As pointed out, it probably won't work on
older or deaf dogs.

My bud uses something, I need to find out what, think Pepper spray. He shoots in front of them. It

Yes, GeoB, I'm here. I use pepper spray and it works quite well. However, I recently bought a Dog Dazer and am impressed with how well it works. The device is a bit large and I have yet figured out a way to mount it to the bike itself, but it will come.

How about just urinating into a cheap spray bottle and using that.

That would serve two purposes,

1) repel dogs

2) cure the SOB that steals your bike from ever drinking something that looked like "Sports
Drink" again.

As far as getting some "overspray" on us .... we guys don't seem to be bothered by "over spray" when
we spray the whole bathroom before we get a "handle" on the trajectory of the stream(s).

I was working on a mtb trail on a hot August day at a local park a few years ago and was carrying
out a 1/2 full water bottle I'd found. A buddy of mine was trail running and comes up on me walking
back to the car. He says "Glad I ran into you and you have something to drink", and asks for the
bottle. He takes a big swallow and asks what's in it. I tell him I don't know, I found it about a

I have one of those ultrasonic devices. Don't count on it.

tick him off!

Dogs are stupider than rocks, I think the u'sonic P-horn distracts a dog for
a couple of picoseconds and they forget what they were doing.

Pepper spray such as halt can blow back on you. It stings! I know. You might try the little canned air horns such as used on boats. Obtainable at a boat supply or variety store such as Wal-Mart. Very loud,very scarey and very cheap and non lethal. Also might get the dog owners attention

Cattle prods work great.Stops em instantly .I carried one mounted to my frame[like a frame pump].
Once you zap the pooch the pooch will not bother you again and even if it does start to give chase
all you need to do is hold up anything that remotely looks like the prod[stick,pump etc etc]
