I think many politicians get around in luxury SUV's both while in and out of
office. As far as presidents go, many of the recent ones seem to have
ranches and farms instead of just homes. I wouldn't be surprised by the cost
of a candidates road or mountain bike, shoes or hairbrush.

It's sort of like asking how you feel about going into a supermarket and
seeing a hundred different types of bread knowing that people are dying from
malnutrition.

Somewhat related, I was watching a tape of the 1994 Worlds RR in Columbia
while in mag trainer hell today and there was a brief shot of a guy on the
side of the course fixing a flat on an old stovepipe clunker that he clearly
used to haul goods for his livelihood. Forgetting Phil L.'s inane comment,
I recalled a friend in New Orleans who managed a bike shop there saying that
guys like that were the real cyclists. Whenever a poor person came in to
the shop (there were many in NO who used bikes for transportation as they
couldn't even afford public transport) he/she was treated with respect and
special attention. Other shops in town would throw these people out.

It only sends the wrong message if you tell an audience at a town hall
debate that none of them look like they make over $200k the you do, or tell
America you married up, probably more so than the other guy or the
moderator.

However, did you notice on ER last night that the roadie character
complained that the other guy wrecked his $6000 Serotta Legend? He even
pronounced Serotta right. First time I tune in in over a year, and they
name my bike brand. Must mean something.

Yeah, and shouldn't he have bought a red-white-and-blue bike,
like those Treks?

For better or worse (most would say better) we live in a country
where average workers (those who still have jobs, anyway - cue
R. Chung here) can drop 8 large on recreational items, or at least
put it on the credit card. I am sure there are guys out there
with what used to be called blue-collar jobs who own home theater
systems that cost more than 8000 bucks. Not to mention boats.
Tons of working men like that own boats, and Suburbans to pull them.

Dropping 8000 bucks doesn't make it flaunting these days, it's
whether the public thinks a bike is a large enough item to drop
that on. Actually I kinda doubt the public cares, and none of the
people who get energized in the blogoworld were gonna vote for
Kerry anyway.

You can't buy squat in the way of a bass boat for $8,000 new. I don't think
anyone cares either, but you've got pretty much no chance of explaining an $800
bicycle, let alone an $8000 one to the guy with the bass boat. You might be
able to explain it as a custom racing machine like that texas guy Armstrong

I think an $8K bike has no point, but in the context of the bling that

around $4,000 in it. Well, a few people spread the word in the following
weeks, and donations poured in to replace the stolen money. I think, in the

Kerry is not riding an Ottrot. It's a steel Colorado III with Chorus 10 and
traditional wheels. It's about a $4,500 bike. That's a lot, but I've had
$4,500 bikes. BFD. Lots of people do.

Bush rides a $7,000.00 Trek 5900 that Lance rode in the Tour. Bush also has
a Trek Fuel that ran about $4,500, too. Does that make you not want to vote
now?
