In the mid-sixties, Mattel made the VRROOM! bike. It had a plastic "engine" and "gas tank". The
"engine" was also available separately.

I don't know whether that's what you mean or if the concept was reintroduced later. Anyway, that's
the "original" and it would be a museum piece today.

No it was nothing like that. It was like the entire frame, and handlebars, had a black plastic
covering, so the whole thing had a plasticky, but cool, sleek black look to it.

sorry.. but around these parts, in '88, if you had a bike that had any type of plastic on it you
would have been severely beaten on sight... twice. Only GT freestyle bikes or Haro and Mongoose BMX
bikes were allowed in my neighborhood. But I do remember the grip mounted "twist throttle" noise
makers that sounded like a motorcycle engine that were available in the late 70's and early 80's.

Sounds like the "motorcycle" bicycles sold in Kmart. A bicycle surrounded by a plastic motorcycle
body. IIRC, there was a police version and "ninja" type.

For several decades in American history, almost every bike sold had a fake gas tank.

That bike doesn't sound nearly as cool as the Yamaha shock bike which was the coolest around 1979.
