I haven't read all this, but what I have read ties in with what I believe.
I do not wear a helmet.

I know helmets are a good idea in the event of a spill and may save me from serious injury. I have purchased them and even worn them. But I hate them. They're uncomfortable, they make my head sweat more and give me a nice pimple line. I love the feeling of cool air across my nice bald scalp. Considering I am 43 and have been commuting by bike since I was 13 and haven't had a spill since I was 17 and considering that I am not a speedster nor reckless nor unpredictable I'll take my chances.

I wear a helmet always on the bike.

Where in Australia are you? I found that the police in Sydney were not interested in whether I was wearing a helmet or not, and I saw an approximately equal number of wearers to non-wearers.

I grew up in WA and returned over the festive period. Most people I saw wearing a helmet, but I quite happily scooted around without one hassle free. What was interesting, however, was how rigidly enforced the wearing of helmets was on Rottnest. You can't hire a bike without taking a helmet.

The fine for not wearing a helmet is $30 the last time I looked so it's not worth their while to book people. 😄

As I said in that reply I never understand why I have to wear a helmet, but I still do because it's the law in Australia.

I hate my helmet. I justify it by acknoledging the fact that the wind messes my hair up and the helmet stops me looking like a [censored]. No wait noone looks like more of a [censored] than a helmet wearer.

I don't care if I do look a [censored], I'd rather be safe. I wear a helmet every time I ride without exception, and would never even consider getting on a bike without it strapped securely on my head. My helmet goes on before I even unlock my bike, and stays on until it's locked up again. Wearing a helmet just makes sense to me. If I'm on a bike, I'm wearing a helmet. Simple.

You never know what might happen. You can fall off your bike very easily.

I always have my helmet on.

Always wear one. Every one of the anti-helmet "studies" I've read point to the fact that a helmet won't protect the brain from rotational damage sustained in the kinds of crashes that are rare to begin with. That's like saying the seat belts in your car won't help if you drive off of a cliff. They write off every other load case as resulting in "minor injuries". Now I'll admit that getting my scalp grated off in a slide (much more common occurance than direct impact) isn't going to kill me, but I'd rather avoid it anyway.

I *almost* always wear one. Im not sure if it is the law in Virginina or not, but id say maybe once out of 10-15 times I wont wear one. Usually its just to run a quick, very close by errand. I know, they say most accidents happen close to home, but I just dont feel like putting one on for a 2-10 block ride up the street. 🙁 I really should change that tho and make it *always*.

I saw a guy buying a new helmet in the shop the other day. He'd crashed into a tree on a downhill. The side of his head not covered with the helmet was messed up. I'm pretty sure he'd been permanantly damaged or dead if not for his helmet.
