You're just paranoid. Next you'll enter the phase where you see some 17 year old kid, stacking shelves at the local supermarket, lifting 100Kg of canned soup. wrong, the sprinters still need to get to the finish. The last 5km, in a field sprint, is equivalent to the last 10km on l'Alpe d'Huez.

There is a definite selection made in the sprint. See for example, OGrady. Numerous podiums in Tour field sprints. Yet he has never won a field sprint in a 2.1 domestic French Race like Sarthe or Dunkirk. He will be beaten by guys like Nazon, Casper, every day of the month at the Tour.

For a sprinter to win the big races, they need to hold their place, and make the selection, to sprint for the win in the last 200m. It is no good sprinting from 10th wheel, 15 metres behind Petacchi, and expect to win. That is sprinting for a top10 place.

You need to be strong, to sprint for the win, in the top 5 wheels at 200 metres to go. Unless your name is Petacchi.
