    absorption/digestion capacity any extra may just end up
    feeding bacteria or passing straight out again.

    constitutes 'too much' and this is where all the problems

    so are qualitatively worse than fats which just make you
    fat, but place no restriction on fat burning. Depending on
    how much is too much they may also be quantitatively worse,
    despite fat having more calories.

    diet debates
    as it's fat that everyone is bothered about and wants to
    get rid of.

    You're covering all the bases. But which base is
    predominantly true is the question. I have an incredibly
    slow metabolic rate at night. (Need more covers than most
    folks. Body temperature always low in the morning even so.)
    And yet I habitually eat way more than many people. (At
    least I used to until recently when I decided over eating
    was probably screwing up my system in some way).

    My understanding is that over eating fats (without excess
    carbs) does NOT make you fat, because it doesnt raise
    insulin levels.

    For me I recently started cheerfully eating loads of oils &
    fats but cut down on carbs... and lost weight.

    Have you actually tried eating high fat, low carb?

    than about 5 or 6 hundred grams. Consider that a typical 60%
    carb diet will give you about 300 grams per day in carbs,
    day in and day out. What happens over time to a typically
    sedentary American? Every extra carb that isn't explicitly
    used in physical activity will be turned to bodyfat. Then
    consider the typical kid that drinks half-gallon sized jugs
    of soda and regular feedings of super-sized fries, pasta and
    pizza crust every day, and imagine where that takes us. Oh
    wait... we are there already. Record levels of obesity,
    record levels of T2 diabetes....

    Because I live in the real world and compromises between
    lifestyle and earning enough money to actually pay for
    the food have to be found. I have had chronic fatigue
    for about 15 years and my available energy to spend
    preparing the perfect diet is severely restricted. Plus
    I have found over years that all manner of extreme
    experiments with my diet, have made very close to zero
    impact on my health and available energy levels in the
    long- and medium- run. (Albeit massive short-term
    impact).

    Your personal problems (although I sympathise with you)
    have little bearing on the biochemistry of nutrition.

    You asked me a personal question about my meals and I
    answered it.

    OK, my question was intended to be rhetorical. I should have
    said that all your meals should have been reasonably
    balanced. It is best that you eat a balanced diet for *each*
    meal, although this is fairly flexible, I believe.

    Really? Shows that it is the amount of calories you absorb
    and not how that is derived.

    must account for every one. So if two people eat a daily
    identical diet of 2000 calories of pasta, and one gets fat

    Negligible. I've just seen a met lab experiment on the
    Atkins diet and they measured the urine of an Atkins dieter
    and a control on a high carb diet. There were no calories of
    ketone bodies in either urine. No extra energy required to
    digest the Atkins diet either. Turns out that Atkins dieters
    just eat less calories than they used to.

    Just seen a met lab study of Atkins diet (Horizon BBC) and
    there is nothing in it, nor ketone bodies in the urine; the
    amounts of energy lost this way are within the noise of the
    experimental error, not worth worrying about. Trying to
    dissipate this amount of energy in heating the body would
    cause all sorts of problems not generally seen.

    So are you claiming that when the body needs energy, and all
    that is there is your fat store, that fat won't be mobilised
    and burnt? Yes, but you will say that in that state, there
    will be no insulin present. Of course when insulin is
    present, no fat will be burned, so if that much insulin is
    present, you are overeating. Gets rather circular. An
    interesting fact to keep in mind is that all the ~30% fat
    eaten in an average diet is burned each day, when the diet
    is eucaloric. No matter what the insulin level is.

    Well if the fat stores were limited to 2000 calories or so,
    there would be no problem either.

    Of course, 10,000 cal of glycogen weigh considerably more
    than 10,000cal of fat.

    If you give two people a piece of gum to chew and one
    chews it 100 times and the other only 50, obviously there
    is a difference in energy expenditure. It would be the
    same with food. A piece of steak of the same calorific
    value as a piece of cake will require more chewing. If
    they are both swallowed whole, the stomach will have to
    work harder to digest the steak. Whichever way you look at
    it high protein diets use up more energy. The difference
    may be small, but a small difference over time (longer
    than the Horizon test) can have a significant effect. At
    any rate the more energy used in digestion the less the
    net gain from the food being eaten.

    Depending on the external temperature the DIT can be offset
    against a reduction in cold-induced thermogenesis to
    seemingly lose no calories. If the external temperature is
    above the thermoneutral temperature for the body, however,
    the extra heat will be a problem requiring the use of more
    energy in sweating.

    If it's not 100% efficient, where do these calories go to?

    Mostly straight through or to bacteria, but also to heat.
    The more churning the stomach has to do the more heat will
    be produced.

    Your body is maintaining its temperature before you eat, so
    any heat from digestion is added to that. In the arctic DIT
    is good, at noon on the equator it isn't.

    Nevertheless, the one who is comfortable in a T-shirt must
    be producing more heat (assuming they both have a core temp
    of 37 degrees and are equally fat). This sort of thing will
    get rid of significant energy as heat as it is happening 24
    hours a day. Being cold is a great way to lose weight, but
    too uncomfortable to be a serious weight-loss technique.

    Fat is always being burnt, except when insulin levels are
    too high. Also, you will never have a situation where fat
    stores are all that there are. Blood glucose levels are
    maintained even if it means treating the lean tissue of your
    body as a glucose store.

    That's why carbs are qualitatively worse for preventing
    obesity. If you never ate any high carb foods, blood
    glucose would rarely rise high enough to cause the levels

    It remains a strange fact the some people get fat on
    pasta diets, whereas others dont. It's not about laws
    of physics being violated, its about human hormones
    digestion and physiology. It could be that the large
    intestines burn the calories... It's certainly true
    that overeating can lead to methane (not to mention
    hydrogen sulphide) production.

    People who eat more than they need and don't gain weight
    generally increase their activity levels to use up the
    extra calories ingested. This is done automatically and
    subconsciously and typically means they fidget more.
    Others may generate more heat and so wear T-shirts when
    others are in coats. If their digestive system has a low
    absorption/digestion capacity any extra may just end up
    feeding bacteria or passing straight out again.

    Mostly straight through or to bacteria, but also to heat.
    The more churning the stomach has to do the more heat will

    There are many people I know who eat "like a horse" and
    never get fat. I've seen them too. They guzzle huge

    exercise either.

    In fact some I know are definitely "too thin" and nothing
    they do seems to enable them to put on weight.

    Conversely there is one fat girl I know who measured who

    everything being counted and weighed. AND still she put
    on weight.

    What you are missing Moosh is an understanding of hormones.
    What happens to the calories? This I dont know. Maybe not
    absorbed. Maybe fermented into methane! Maybe the metabolic
    rate varies (with thyroid levels)... who knows.

    cant understand that how fat you are is not JUST a matter of
