Thanks Bob - does that mean I need special Time Atac shoes to fit them? All
the shoes I see seem to be either SPD or Look...???

No, you don't need to seek out specific Time shoes, anything listed as
SPD compatible will take atac cleats. Note that is plain SPD, not
SPD-R or SPD-SL which are different fittings again.

SPD and Time Atac are the two leading mtb type pedal and cleat
systems, and almost any casual or off road shoe will take cleats from
either system. They are both used extensively by road cyclists too
because of the recessed cleat they employ, which gives the ability to
walk normally when off the bike.

The Look shoes you see are (unsurprisingly) for use with Look pedals.
This is a road specific system where walking comfortably off the bike
is a secondary consideration to riding performance. The shoes are
usually rigid and the cleats sit proud of the sole and so are clumsy
off the bike. They won't work with atac's.

Do be aware that Time (like Shimano) have a road specific pedal
system, which is different from their Atac line. Shoes for the Time
road pedals won't (usually) work with Atac cleats.

It sounds a bit of a nightmare, but it's simple once you become
familiar with it all.

You might say you have two families of pedal systems - one
specifically for performance based road riding and another for mtb and
casual use.

The road based pedal systems are Look, Shimano SPD-SL, Time, Speedplay
and some others. Broadly speaking shoes and cleats within this family
are cross compatible, but you will always have to use the right cleats
for the right pedal.

The MTB and casual systems are Shimano SPD, Time ATAC, CrankBro
Eggbeaters, Speedplay Frogs and again some others. Same thing applies
here with shoes, any shoe designed to be used within this "family" can
be made to work with any cleats. You must of course though still use
the right cleats on the right pedals.

Road specific systems usually have rigid shoes and external cleats
making walking difficult. MTB systems have more flexible shoes with
the cleat recessed into the sole so you can walk properly.

The shoes are advertising which holes they have fitted in the sole. SPD
and Time ATAC have the same hole fittings on the sole, so any shoe which
takes SPD will be OK for ATAC.
IMO, ATAC are by far the best off-road pedal,with the added bonus that
thy can be used without cycling shoes on occasions, as the pedal
platform is a little bigger than most SPD pedal.
They are beaten for mud clearance by 'Eggbeater' pedals, but these are a
bit more expensive, and are only for use with cycling shoes.

I like them on-road too. Engagement is more positive, simpler and
easier to keep clean, and no faffing about with tension. (I'm a
trundlie rather than a roadie, so being able to walk is more
important than every last gramme of performance which is why ATACs
and not Looks).
