  1. I have decided that when I go back to Ontario in about a week, I will swim
the 8km swim I talked about.

The only way I wont do it is if the weather is horrible: Thunder/ lightning,
    or extremely high winds.

Rain wont stop me, as I am already wet.

I do have one question for you distance swimmers.

What is a good dinner the night before, and a good breakfast the day of?

    Thanks

    Micheal

Pasta and banannas the night before, porrige for breakfast. But only if you
know that neither will upset you. Don't forget to hydrate well before too,
with plain water no fizzy sugary drinks).
Let us know how it went, and good luck.

Good Meal? Try reading some simple stuff on Glycemic Index (try Google it).
I wouldn't do pasta & bananas on the night b4, as they are a distastefull
combination. Porridge for breakfast won't do either (see Glycemic Index), as
it will sit in your stomage as a massive dump.

How much time is there between breakfast and start and how long will the 8K
    take you?

I plan to get up around 8am, be at the start for around 10am. I have till
sunset -- 8pm to finish it, although, If it took me under 3hrs for 4km, I am
planning for 6hrs for the 8km.

What works for me would be
    1. Last meal eaten not more than 2 hours b4 the start.
    2. Be present at start area not less than 1 hour b4 the start (paperwork to
be done, visit toilet, get nerves under control)

As far as meals are concerned. Cereals and fruit will do for breakfast.
Pasta will do as well. As you will do a 6 hours swim, you will need to
consider what and how to eat and drink while you are swimming. Got any
    thoughts on that issue?

6 hours without food isn't smart. If I was your coach, that would be a nogo.
Only drinks won't be enough. Ask the people that will take your drinks, to
take some food as well. Bars will do, but some like a sandwich or a cookie.

The _most_ important thing is to follow the cardinal rule - nothing new
on race day. That includes the night before as well. Don't take
_anyone's_ advice about what works best, just eat whatever you're used
to eating the night before, and the morning of, a swim, and if you're
not used to eating a few hours before because you don't usually swim in
the mornings, then be sure to have a _light_ breakfast that consists of
things you know you tolerate well.

That said, an 8 k swim is a long way, and if you haven't adequately
prepared for it, I think I speak for everyone here when I say we'd
rather see you enter an event you stand a reasonable chance of
finishing. I assume you're expecting to be swimming for at least a
couple of hours. If you're longest recent training swim hasn't been at
least half the time you're expecting this one to take, you ought to
question the wisdom of entering this event.
