DIY HID Lights?

for diving, I have. See www.blackart.com.au. The problem is that the lamps
are hard to get in Aus, and take a long time to ship from USA... I made
these divelights up and basically sell them on a $0 profit basis, and would
do the same for cycling if there was the interest...

BTW, the light is very big, and very white, even late at night at 20m in a
silty river :-)

David, would you be willing to reveal where you get them from in the US or
is that a trade secret?? I have been toying with the idea of making up a
HID bike light for some time but I haven't had much luck in sourcing
lamps/ballasts in Aust.

Hi Gags - it's no trade secret! I get them fromWelch Allyn www.walamp.com.
The lamp I get is the M10P001-1 which is the 10W 6 degree (the M10P002-1 is
13 degree) and the ballast is the B10N001
http://www.walamp.com/lpd/files/datasheets/ISL305B2.pdf. This ballast is
rated at 12V (max 12.5V) but I drive it with SLA batteries with a max
voltage of 13.2V or a bit less under load. I fit a diode for reverse
polarity protection (very important with these ballasts) which takes about
0.7V and thus brings the battery back to the ballast design maximum voltage
although under load there is still a bit of margin for error! The diode also
acts a bit like a voltage regulator preventing over-discharge to some
extent...

Anyway, if you need any other details, let me know. Or, if anyone has a good
idea for a mounting system that is easily bought, and/or a battery/charger
system that is either DIY or off-the-shelf, let me know and I'm happy to
design a lamp housing and get some run off and anodised up all nice...

Built some with a friend. You cannot buy low wattage HID bulbs over here
unless your willing to pay as spares for another commercial product. We used
some Philips HID bulbs with some modified Ballasts. 45+Watts from memory. IF
you can get 10-20 Watt units then it would be very worth while. A lot of ppl
get distracted by the misleading bulb wattage claims on these units. By the
time you add the control units you have lost another 7-10Watts or more. You
also have the restart issues and a few other problems. I will get around to
importing some units one day and put together a decent light.

What's the total current draw? What are the restart times like? 6 Deg is way
too tight for riding. Is there much spill light? Can you get other angles?
It might be worth you putting up some specs on these units.

I can get 6 or 13 degree, but if it was me I'd ride with a 6 as there's a
reasonable amount of spill. 13 might be better for MTB maybe? Restart is
instant (or at least can hot restart a couple of seconds after they go out,
but take maybe 10 sec to get up to full brightness).

Current draw is about 1A, or in practice a bit less. Do my 4.2Ah SLA gives
me about 3.75-4.00 hours before it cuts out.
