  1. So says Dr. Mirkin in his new book, "The Healthy Heart Miracle." He claims to have successfully
treated 100's of diabetics. His diet: ditch refined carbs, replace with whole grains. I bought his
    book and like it.

  2. I prefer carb counting myself. MUCH more flexiblity

What do refined carbs have to do with the Exchange Plan? While technically, you can figure an
exchange for a refined food, just as you can figure the nutritional value of any food, the emphasis
of the Exchange Plan is whole grains and other whole foods.

  4. Dr. Mirkin says ditch the exchange diet in his book. The exchange diet has been around forever, and
if it worked we'd know about it. The average American only has 1 serving of whole grains daily.
I doubt that the average diabetic is much different. Dr. Mirkin's patients use his wife Diana as
    a nutritionist, it's a whole learning program.

Well I don't need to read his book to know that he's got SOMETHING right. Mind you, it's not exactly
earth shatteringly new news is it? We all know that high fibre carbs take almost forever to break
down into sugars and refined carbs do it almost instantly. We also know that high and fast rises in
    BG aren't good.

Seems to me like lots of "Doc's" are jumping on a well travelled bandwagon lately. Maybe plain old
doctoring is too hard and not profitable enough anymore?

The Exchange Plan as we know it today, has not been around forever. I am not sure exactly how long
it *has* been around, but I know that there was a different and even stricter Exchange Plan in the
'60s. Back then, some foods were never allowed. Now while pretty much all foods are allowed, the
emphasis is still on whole grains and other whole foods. I don't know what the average American diet
is, because I've never eaten that way. My parents were health food nuts and still are. If you're
going to knock something, you should read about it first. As for the average American Diet, that has
no bearing at all on the Exchange Plan or any other diet plan. What you could say is that the
average America diet is not working. I highly doubt that the average American follows the Exchange
plan since it is written specifically for diabetics.

  10. It's been around long enough to know it doesn't work. Mirkin's plan does work, and he has hundreds
of patients to prove it. How's your Hba1c? Mirkin's patients Hba1c is less than 6. Mine is 5.2.
Hba1c is a good predictor of both complications and mortality. Who is Dr. Mirkin? See
    drmirkin.comAboutDrMirkin.htm No - I don't work for him nor am I a relative.

My mistake about the Dr, but I did say I wasn't certain. As for my HbA1c, it is 5.9, and no, I don't
follow the Exchange Diet or any other. The thing is, purely as I see it, there are approx 7 billion
humans alive today, and therfroe approx 7 billion diet plans. Not even so-called identical twins are
actually identical - witness 50% concordance for t1 diabetes.

I repeat, apologies to the doctor.

You miss the point. I think (possibly wrong) no such person or book exists, it is a wind-up from

  17. There is a Dr. Gabe Mirkin. He's had a radio show, written several books, has taught at several
medical schools, and according to his web site is board cert in 4 specialties (not including
internal med or endo). He's also been a marathoner. I've heard his name over the years in relation
    to sports medicine. bj

I have read about Dr. Mirkin. I don't care to try his plan. My last A1c was 6.1. I should also add
that I have a thyroid problem that directly relates to my A1c. I had a very low A1c (in the 4's)
because my thyroid was running way high! It has taken several years to get my thyroid in range. Now
that it finally is, my numbers have been running lower. I expect my next A1c to be lower.

I do not believe that the A1c is necessarily a good predictor or complications or mortality. You
could be a very brittle diabetic and have a good A1c. Now if it's a bad A1c, that's another matter.
I already have complications. Namely Neuropathy. Had it upon diagnosis. That in itself forces me to
keep my BG in range. If I don't, I'm in pain.

If the diet works for you, then fine. Mine is working for me and so long as it continues to work for
    me, I'll make no changes.

My Dr. is Dr. Northrup. he has my A1c 5.7 or lower for a year and a half. He doesn't sell books, or
    have a radio show.

  20. Julie,

True, Hba1c is just one risk indicator. If your diet is working for you by all means stay with it.
Mirkin's plan does require a lot of work and changes, I doubt that most could follow it without the
help of a nutritionist or other support. Both Dr. Mirkin and Dr. Willett agree that the typical
"Western" diet of meat, potatoes, and refined grains account for most heart disease. "Julie Bove"
