Something new: My a.m. readings have been in the low 20s while 2hr postprandial readings rather high
-160s. Is it likely my meter is whack? I have been shaky in the mornings but discounted this as I
have a thyroid problem. Is soap & water OK to clean lancet, as long as it's kept dry? Jan

as I have a thyroid problem. Is soap & water OK to clean lancet, as long as it's kept dry?If you have a thyroid problem, that may well be the cause. I have a thyroid problem and for a while
was running hyper thyroid. During this time, I spent more time in hypo BG-land than out of it. I
remember sitting there shaking, clutching my meter in one hand and a bag of candy in the other. I
couldn't miss my meal time by as little as 10 minutes or I'd faint. Are you on any meds? What type of diet are you eating? Do you have a snack before bed? Do you
exercise? If so, when? All these things could factor in as well.As for the lancet, it is not necessary to clean it. In fact, you should NOT clean it because doing
so will dull the point. And I should think that water could cause it to rust. I did clean my lancing
device once when it got pear juice all over it. I cleaned the lancet at that time as well, but then
changed the lancet afterwards. I think I used alcohol that time to clean it. And I occasionally
clean the lancing device if I get a lot of blood on it. This doesn't always happen, but it has
happened a few times. If you are testing only yourself, you can continue to use that same lancet until it becomes too
painful and/or you can no longer get a good drop of blood with it. I usually use mine for a few
weeks at a time. But if you are testing someone else, you must use a fresh lancet and then change it
again when you test yourself.--

Are you newly diagnosed? Those numbers are wild swings. What meds do you take? What type of diet are
you following? What do you eat before bed? Are the 20's readings when you first wake up, before
eating or moving around? I don't clean lancets at all, I use them til they start to hurt then
replace them, some people replace them daily. -

another meter for comparison as I think I'd feel more than shaky if my FBG was really 20. Having a
late night snack and taking half of the prinivil then did help with the probs on waking. Thanks,

After some consideration and reading your posts, I think I'll have to get another meter. Thanks for
your interest. Jan -
Not much talk about the meter in this thread. Are the strips expired? Is the meter set to the
correct lot number? Have any tests been done with control solution that comes with the meter to test
its accuracy?Vince
