Discs Vs Rims

I think the best brake for the money on the market is the Deore BRM525 Hydraulic. I've seen them fo
$100 US per wheel. I wouldn't even bother with a rim brake of any kind these days.

I use Magura HS33's on the trials bike. They provide the same power and modulation as a disc brake.
My reason for using them on the trials bike instead of discs is the weight issue, they weigh nearly
the same as v-brakes but provide the same performance as disc brakes.

We use various disc brakes spread amongst our collection of all our bikes, ranging from Avid
Mechs, Shimano XT's, and Shimano Deore's. We have never had problems with any of the disc brakes
that we use.

A good mechanical disc will be a lot better than cheap hydraulics (and even some others) as well.
You don't say what kind of riding you do but I've used both Hayes and Avid mechanical discs for XC
riding with much success. I like the Avid mechanicals slightly better but both provided excellent
stopping power with minimal maintenance.

YMMV, of course.

Another good reason for the HS33's is some trials moves will rip a disc caliper right off the frame.

You can experiment by doing a rear wheel hop going backwards...its a sure way to test the
limitations of your frame and caliper...

Ditto on the Avids. I had Avids on my bike for over 2 years and all I've done is to change the
brake pads.

Avid mechs are what I put on mine and I'm pretty satisfied with them. All I do is XC though. The
other day I was about to hit a small tree, about 1/2 inch in dia., but the Avid put a stop to me
really quick. It wouldn't have hurt hitting the tree of course, but the recoil would have stung
like hell...
