Disc break cheat

  1. is there a product out there to mount disc breaks on a frame without pre-existing mounts? And if so, where? And if so, any thoughts/opinions on the product?

    I doubt that it can be safely done as the mounting of the disc brake caliper is only a small part of the design criteria. The frame, drop-out, fork, and other portions of the overall design need to be stronger to handle the loads. There are newer bicycles sold today that have rim brakes, but are designed to handle disc brake installation as a retrofit.

    An example of a current bicycle that can more easily be retrofitted is:

    Some are even more easily retrofitted as the hubs come with disc brake mounts.
    Of course, the easiest way is to just buy the bicycle with everything you need/want all incorporated. Purchasing it that way also is often the most economical. If I lived where you live, a fully disc braked mountain bicycle would be high on my priority list.

    Thanks for replying. I figured that buying a disc ready bike would be best, but it's a lot less fun than building my own. This question was actually going to be used in regards to building a cross bike--something original and fun.

    2 way by after maket disc tabs and screw or weld them on from

    or a whole system from therapycomponents.combtmoreinfo.htm a little price at 150 but i have one instal woth not problms and stops great

    It may allow you to mount the disc brake calipers, but what insures you that your frame and fork will have the structural integrity needed to handle the loads?
    Will your frame and fork manufacturer warranty this application?
    If you follow this plan, will you check often enough to make sure that fatigue isn't causing premature failure of the stressed areas?

    Those are all really good points, thank you for presenting them. I guess I better start considering those possibilities of failure as well. Niave me assumes that if a manufacturer sells a product to mount disc brakes that it must be safe, right? But the bike company obviously didn't plan on using disc brakes...hmmm, more to consider. Thanks.

    There is a product called Brake Therapy which mounts on the axle, and is immobilized by means of a link rod to the standard brake boss. Check it out.

    avid likes them too they say this is the one aftermarket supported way to install disk brakes to non disk frames. if avid says it good and says this in there manuels , why would they support [censored], ive had mine a little over a yer on a gt lts i use everything breaks have always worked no probs once set up and i dont go light on my bike ither :p
