Disc Brake Recommendations For Me

Shimano XT 203mm in the front & Shimano XT 165mm in the rear.

Ok, I'm looking at getting the Mavic Crossmax Enduro disc wheels and I
need some advice on what disc brake system to get. I don't race but do
some serious mountain biking on real mountains with lots of rocks and
dropoffs. Could you recommend a good system for this particular bike?
I know that I'll need the Specialized disc brake adapter for the rear
becaue the frame didn't have support for discs in 1999. The front
shocks do have the mounting points.

I agree here. It may not happen for awhile and it may never happen BUT
SID;s are scarey flexy why risk it.

For Hydro discs the Shimano Deore is the best value.

For Mechanical the Avid Mech discs are the best value.

Stay away from Hayes Mech, I have had them and they squeel big time and
aren't better than good V brakes.

Thanks. I think I've changed the wheelset I'm going to get. After
reading more, I think I'd rather just have an XTR/Mavic 717 disc
wheelset. Easy to have serviced and still strong and light.

I went from V's to Avid mechs simply because I did not
want to change my brake levers, and I've been happy
with them. I don't have hydros so I can't really compare.

Bad advice. A lot of single crown forks shouldn't run 8 inch discs,
especially SIDs .
The new Hope Minis with one piece calipers are light and powerful
enough with 6 inch discs.

Why not? I thought bigger disks were to disipate heat, decrease lever
pull force, and increase modulation. Its not like they'll generate any
more force on the fork. That is determined by the tire.

That's a good argument to avoid SIDS entirely, regardless of the brakes
used. Again, it doesn't matter if you're using cantis 9assuming
reasonable hand strength) or a rotor off a Ducati and Brembo six pot
calipers. The tire will limit the torque at the lower headset bearing.
Or should I not be doing brakies with my Avid mech. on a Fox 100RL? :-)

I too have the Fox Float 100 RL, with 203mm rotor. Hasn't busted yet.

I checked the manual (imagine!). Fox says don't go bigger than 180 mm.
