  1. We are used to people attacking TI to feel better about their swimming style. Now it seems that
other people find it necessary to attack the Pritikin diet to feel better about their diet plan.

I read a funny comment that the main reason for weight loss in the Atkins Diet was all the energy
the dieters expended talking about it. Had I not been following this group, I might have missed
    the humor.

    Hi Donal,

people have "attacked" Total Immersion on this group because some of its core beliefs fly directly
in the face of empirical observation of the World's best swimmers. But hey, even if some of the
words make no sense, you can always look at the pictures 🙂

  3. On a similar note... The sponsored links that Google puts up when I view the r.s.s newsgroup used to
be from swimming equipment suppliers but now they're all for diet related web sites. Maybe this is
an indicator that we need some more swimming related topics here? By which I don't mean Connie's
    latest 100m times ;-)

As far as I can tell, the attack on the Pritikin diet was by one guy. I don't understand why he even
cares to attack Pritikin as he didn't even know that Dr. Pritikin is deceased. Also, for me, at
least, this is not a religion. Eat what you want; it doesn't bother me.

I don't know why people take all of this so personally. If you can find a way of eating (WOE) that
works for you, allows you to be healthy, and maintain your weight, who gives a rats ass what it is.
I do Atkins because I eat food I enjoy, I lose weight and I can continue to exercise at high
intensity. If someone else does Diet X and it does them same for them, well all the more power to
them and I'm happy they found a way to be healthful.

You're absolutely welcome to start a topic of your own, that interests you and has to do with
swimming. That would be much more efficient and satisfying than sitting on the sidelines and
complaining about what others are ot aren't doing. Imagine, your satisfaction or dissatisfaction
would not be dependent on what someone else did or did not do.

I don't even think he was a regular poster here. I don't know why he would come here to attack
    Pritikin anyway.

Well, There are certain cycles in play here. The swimming-related topics always pick up during the
weeks before and after a major swim meet, and there aren't very many. The only biggies between now
and the Olympics will be the NCAA championships and the Masters World Championships.

But I'm sure some bonehead will start the "Who is the greatest swimmer of all time" thread again.
And there will be the "Michael Phelps Roolz" thread and the "Ian Thorpe is a washed up has-been"
thread. And there is bound to be one on THG, and any female swimmer who does well automatically gets
slandered in a "cheater" thread, especially if she has a lean body and an underbite.

And then there's the guy who asks for videos of Summer Sanders.

Who's complaining? I was just making a casual comment about something I noticed that I thought was
rather amusing. FWIW, I've actually been enjoying some of the diet related posts.

A good point. Swimming technique & nutrition both involve complex systems. We seem to know some
things that obviously don't work, some things that seem to be prerequisites for stable states but
can't really pin down the underlying principles. Something like watching a good frame from Conway's
Game Of Life, without being told how the cell states are toggled. As far as diet is concerned I
can't help but note how most, how ever casually, end up limiting caloric intake and all draw alot of
attention to what one eats. I'm no expert but, like training, I'd think the key (for now at any
rate) is consistency. Pick some plan ($plan), ensure there's no obvious pitfalls and stick with it.
It probably doesn't matter much what $plan is.

I don't suppose there's a Summer mailing list, eh? 🙂 That being said I only met her once - Calgary
winter nationals, nov '95. Not only did she put on a display in the pool, but put on quite a display
of personality as well. We could do with some more role models like that.

Well, my opinion is that America now depends on role models way too much. It is as if American kids
can't become adults without role models they can imitate. So American kids grow up imitating role
models rather than developing character. It seems like America is now based on role models and
sending messages. We worry about what kind of message we are sending, and we want our kids to have
role models, but when they all imitate a popular role model, we complain about this or that message
that role model is sending every time he or she does something we don't like. And then we demand
that our children not succumb to peer pressure, which is, after all, the inevitable result of
    imitating role models.

    Just my morning rant,

Could be but given the fact that we (I lump my fellow Canadians in this group too) do look to others
it'd be nice to have examples worth looking to. Especially here in Canada where there is no
widespread high school program, the funding laughable and no hope for a swimmer to ever support
themselves professionally. At this point I cheer for anyone not holding a hockey stick.

Which of your roles as a human being, citizen, sportsman, employee, etc, are you confused about?
