BTW, the new spec shows Rigida rims instead of Alex (boo!). I thought they went out of business years ago? Yet another trademark bought by the Taiwanese?

Yes! My wife had a 1973 or 1974 Mercury Vomit that was this color. I married her in spite of it.
My advice: find a 2007 model or wait until 2009.
It's ordered and nearly paid for, so I'm gonna have to run with it. Since it's getting some Freddy Fenders from the garage--perhaps a visit to a pick-a-part for a chrome Merc bauble I can epoxy to the fender.

No competition on Konas around, but I'm fine paying the 400 list to a really sweet new LBS that sells me small parts for peanuts. I like the cheap and cheerful spec. Add Kool-Stops and ride as is. As I've sold off the back catalog of weird bikes, this will leave me only two bikes, mass produced in Asia--easily replaced in case of mishap, and thus fewer earthly attachments. Now, check out these earlobes!

True--their Paddy Wagon is one of the sexiest blues around. I'll also give them massive props for a budget bike that comes in eight sizes, and whose smart design pleases both beginners and veteran cyclists. I'd rather have a goofy frame color than boinger seatpost, fork, and other pointless "buy me" accessories. People might sneer at "Altus" mechanicals--so did I till I worked on a few--the dang things work, and cost nothing to replace. Compared to Trek, Kona spends money on things that matter, but aren't as conspicuous, like tires. Does Trek even make a lower end bike that's not a bundle of pandering hype? Same good things can be said for Jamis kit, but the nearest dealer is in Chattanooga.
BTW an Electra Amsterdam was on the tootler short list till I heard one pass at night. Nastiest sounding bottle generator ever. Yuck! Plus, I was more in love with the pin stripes than the geometry.

These days, does Trek make a bike in *any* price range that isn't "a bundle of pandering hype"? Does C'dale, Specialized, Giant, etc? Hype sells, that's why almost everyone you see on any given day is riding a SpecTreknDale. 🙁

Well, I do have a DL-1 and a Univega single speed in cold storage with a friend. Still got my Raleigh Sprite as well, but think I'll offer her to the gorgeous "Tasha" who lives with her feller cross the way. I figure two hundred bucks for a torn down and reimagined Sprite with custom wheels should be fair:

They all make a few really neat bikes, but retail is retail, and managers stock da bling. My LBS is a bit nicer. We have a nice little village of liberal kooks here in Nashville, so they sell a lot of unpractical, but fun cruisers that are great for putting to the store, plus a whole bunch of perfectly decent basic road bikes and 26" "comfort" bikes. They also sell good numbers of Amsterdams ( #1 lesbian choice in my neighborhood) and Kona Jakes. I've been hounding them to stock a basic "long reach brake" all rounder road bike of any make, but they seem clueless to the idea. I was thrilled to see the Dew in their selection, as it's one of the few "hybrids" that's stayed true to the form, with unfortunately the upper models getting the "steal me" brakes.

Jersey? It demands a wife-beater and some of those fancy flip-flops-- with the extra thick rainbow soles! I might even wear my TSC ball cap while riding it for extra panache. Alternately, I have some square cut black speedos I bought in Hungary--those with some aviators and zinc oxide would be another good look!
