Is it my imagination or what .. but after t1 (18km) having a lead of 45 something sec .. he only gained another 15 for the rest of 55 km .. Don't get me wrong, I believe he did an amazing job but I saw him look twice at the cam bike and slow down way below his normal aggressiveness before a few curves, which make me think he could have gain an additionnal minute at full speed if he wanted.. maybee he did not want to catch Basso and avoid crushing his moral knowing he was fighting for the 2nd place ..
He knew that he had a great lead as he concentrated on the very beginning of the trial. He said that he then decided to take it a bit more cautiously. He had everything in hand and knew full well that he was going to win the time trial. If memory serves, Lance fell from his bike in a time trial from 2 years ago. I'm sure that was somewhere in his mind.

He admitted to backing down a bit when learning that he was 45 sec ahead of the rest of the serious challengers. Kind of makes you wonder what he is really capable of in an all-out effort, when he does not have to worry about getting back into the saddle on the following day. I am anxiously awaiting Lance's effort in the 1-hour world record.

Didn't you see him pass Basso? Basso was his 2 minute man.
If I recall.. the interval between the top racers was 3 min and since LA and Basso were 1 and 2nd before the ITM .. that would be 3 min not 6 .. anyway .. I think he made him a favor but intentionally not catching him and destroying his moral, knowing he was fighting to keep his 2nd place. 😉

I think Lance would've helped Basso by passing him and giving him a "target". Most riders get a boost when they have someone going faster on front of them.

Yep- I thought Klondie had overtaken Basso after 18, but a recheck shows it was during 19 that Klondie moved to second-so the starte interval was 3 minutes.
Basso was 10 seconds away from being passed by Lance at the end of stage 19.
Ok. I suppose I was thinking about the ITT up l'Alpe d'Huez when Lance passed Basso, his 2 minute man. I remember Basso glanced across to him, but Lance stared steely eyed forward. It's kind of like when a jury comes up with a guilty verdict in some cases; they don't look at the condemned. 😎
