  1. I guess all the commercials (and panning) of the new Halle Berry film
Catwoman have got me thinking -- how can someone like Halle Berry, who is
in absolutely perfect physical condition, have diabetes? I don't understand
it. I thought diabetes was linked to weight, but it obviously isn't in her
case. What makes it happen? Is it an unavoidable genetic legacy?

Keeping in shape helps control the diabetes. Works for both Type 1 and Type
    2.

Halle Berry is a Type I. Her body took out its own beta cells so she
can't make enough insulin anymore. It's an autoimmune thing.

To be honest, I haven't really paid that much attention to it, although it
runs in my dad's family. I have heard of juvenile diabetes and adult onset.
I heard that juvenile was far deadlier.

Halle Berry is T2 diabetic, and controls it through diet, exercise, stress
management and insulin -- as all we T2's could if we were dedicated enough.
Here is a short exerpt from www.diabetesmovies.com:

"While filming Living Dolls, Berry collapsed, having entered a diabetes
coma. Her doctors noted that stress probably caused the disease to manifest
itself early in her life rather than in her later years. Although doctors
told her that she would be insulin-dependent the rest of her life, she has
improved her health through diet, exercise, meditation, and low-stress
    activities."

Well, Halle Berry should know. These are her own words in an interview with
    USA Today:

"Once you're a diabetic, you're pretty much a diabetic," says Berry. "I have
adult onset diabetes. I was diagnosed when I passed out one day. I've gotten
my diabetes to a really manageable place. So I don't have really any
complications due to it, but I still have to deal with it and check my blood
    many times a day."
Adult onset or type 2 diabetes, usually presents after the age of 13.
Individuals with this form of diabetes have a pancreas that still produces
insulin, though not adequately. They also have "insulin resistance," which
means that the body's tissues do not respond normally to insulin. But
patients with type 2 diabetes can often control the disease through diet,
exercise, and oral medications rather than by the use of insulin
    injections."

Apparently her diabetes unfortunately went undiagnosed for too long; she had
lost too many beta cells as a result and now requires insulin.

Peter, Type 2 usually shows up earlier, but a Type 1 can have its
onset in adulthood. "Adult onset" can happen with either sort.
That's why it isn't clear what type she has. The key to typing isn't
when it is diagnosed, but what its genesis is.

yes, diabetes can be genetic. it's also more common in some ethnic groups
than others. no, being overweight does not automatically mean you're
diabetic, and being diabetic doesn't make you overweight.

i have a friend who is insulin dependant, and he's 6'1" and probably weighs
under 165. he eats like a normal 20 something guy, then pulls out his
    glucose meter and his kit.

i'm so sick of these stereotypes that insist that fat = unhealthy, or
unhealthy = fat. have you seen the lipitor commercials lately? the ones
with the "normal" folks, at good weight, in good shape, who *still* have
    high blood pressure?
it's kind of like that. some folks are just more prone to certain disorders
than others, regardless of their weight.

My close friend is as skinny as they come, and has been diabetic since
    childhood.

The adult onset diabetes (type 2?) is the one where being overweight is
    linked.

Thank you, kelly, for saying this. i'm always the one who seems to have to
keep harping on this very point. Even though it is often true that being
too overweight bring on health problems, it is not a given that
    fat=unhealthy.

    Mostly, yes. But not always.

Thats a pretty much outdated way to say Type 1 and Type 2. Juvenile is Type 1
and adult onset is type 2. Its my feeling that because especially with humans
there are excpetions to every rule using the terms type 1 and type 2 are much
    more accurate.

  17. You can have type 2 and be of a normal weight, too. It is genetic.

While 80% of people diagnosed with type 2 are overweight, 20% of them are
not. And there's some evidence that thew weight comes on after blood sugar
control has started to deteriorate and is a result, not the cause of the
    diabetes.

I was recently reading in a medical book published in 1919 which made the
point that in the "diabetes of adulthood" the first symptom was weight gain
and that the medical treatment was to avoid eating starch.

It is only because people aren't diagnosed for many years after their blood
sugar control has deteriorated, when their diabetes has become quite severe
and their fasting blood sugar extremely high that doctors now believe that
diabetes is caused by obesity. In fact, the research shows that the majority
of the obese do NOT become diabetic since their pancreases have the ability
    to grow new insulin-producing cells.

Researchers have also found that if you give tests of pancreas beta cell
function to people of normal weight or underweight who have diabetic
relatives you discover that their insulin production and mitochondrial
    function are already impaired.
