    Patricia who is loving the posts on this group! < After
    smoking for 50 years, quiting was the hardest thing I've
    ever done. I did it with the "Patch". After I was
    diagnosed with diabetes, the Doc asked if I smoked, when I
    told him I had quit he said "Well, that just saved your
    feet". Good luck.

    Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things a person can
    do. While I've not been a smoker myself, I come from a
    family of smokers and have seen them and many friends
    struggle, struggle and struggle over the years to free
    themselves of this habit.

    I know it's hard... and it's important... But for diabetics
    it's even more important.

    Here's some info from the ADA:

    Smoking damages and constricts the blood vessels. This
    damage can worsen foot ulcers and lead to blood vessel
    disease and leg and foot infections. Of people with diabetes
    who need amputations, 95 percent are smokers.

    That really bears reading again: In all diabetics who get
    amputations: 95 percent of them were smokers.

    Smokers with diabetes are more likely to get neuropathy
    (nerve damage) and kidney disease.

    Smoking doubles your risk of getting limited joint mobility.

    People with diabetes who smoke are three times as likely
    to die of cardiovascular disease as are other people
    with diabetes.

    Smoking increases your blood pressure.

    Smoking raises your blood glucose level, making it harder to
    control your diabetes.

    Not fun!

    how about this for a good reason - want to see your daughter
    on her 21st = birthday ? that was my reason and i stopped
    cold turkey when i was = diagnosed as diabetic - period.

    Cold turkey is not the best way to stop. You are basically
    an addict, both mentally and physically. Don't underestimate
    the latter.

    Research shows that the best chance of stopping is with the
    help of special chewing gun (best score) and a good second
    those nicotine "band aids" or whaddayacallem.

    And of course the people around you, supporting that mental
    process. All the best of luck. If you succeed, reward
    yourself with at least 5 to 10 years extra. 🙂

    I am sorry you had to wait this long. I smoked for 30 years,
    and tried to quit many times. I found much to my surprise
    that there is a way to quit, without spending money. It does
    involve will power, and some help. I read the Alcoholics
    Anonymous book, and was impressed with the basis of the
    program. I don't drink, so I read it out of curiosity.
    Anyway, one evening, after finishing a cigarette, I
    discovered that the ciggie tasted like fecal matter. I
    absolutely was tired of it. However, I had smoked in excess
    of 2 packs a day for quite a few years. Well, I went to bed,
    and hoped that the taste would go away. The next morning, I
    thought to myself, I made it through the night, now let us
    see if I can get along today. I never told anyone what I was
    doing. Anyway, following the Alcoholic Creed, I did it one
    day at a time for 6 weeks, until my wife asked me if I had
    quit. I told her I was trying. It took me about 3 months
    before I got over the craving, and I hate to admit, I still
    get an urge now and then 15 years later. It will be your
    decision, and don't punish yourself. Just pick up the pieces
    and try again, until you do. Oh yes, I have to tell you,
    that when I took a stress test for my heart, an ultra sound
    image was made of my heart. During the process, the
    technician told me that I had been a heavy smoker, and that
    there was irrepairable damage to my heart. I cannot
    legislate you to quit. However, I can only encourage you to
    get the self discipline, and love of your daughter, and
    force yourself to do so. It won't be easy at first, but if
    you work at it, you will soon find yourself smoke free.

    My best wishes, and may you need no stents, radiation, or
    chemo.

    I smoked for 27 (started at age 12) years, 2+ packs a day
    towards the end. It was one of my favorite activities! Two
    things that helped me to quit. Pregnancy and hypotherapy.
    Obviously neither of those things worked for you. You might
    try the hypotherapy one more time. I was told that it
    wouldn't work unless you *really* wanted to quit. Well, I
    didn't want to quit and still wish I could smoke. That's how
    much I liked it! And yet it worked like a charm for me. I
    did light one more cigarette after the hypnotherapy. The man
    doing it said that for most people the effect wasn't
    immediate. I took a few puffs on that cigarette and put it
    out carefully, relighting it throughout the day. The next
    day, I awoke and didn't smoke. Nor did I feel the need to.
    Oh, I wanted to. But didn't need to.

    It might also have helped that I managed to cut way back in
    the two or three weeks before the hypnotherapy. I was
    smoking those really skinny cigarettes and allowed myself
    only one puff at a time. If you find this too hard to do,
    you might try some of those expensive, fancy ones with the
    colored papers. Not sure if you can buy them in a store, but
    they can be mail ordered. I got some of those once as a
    gift. They have nothing but pure tobacco and no additives in
    them so they go out very quickly and need to be relit. Good
    luck! I know how hard quitting can be!

    Quit smoking. You owe it to your daughter. You owe it to
    yourself. You owe it to everyone around you. You owe it to
    the world. You won't regret quitting a bad habit.

    I am familiar with AA. I went for a long time, I am not a
    drinker haven't been for over 8 years , but I lived with one
    my entire life one way or the other... I have many of the
    books that I can read for landing. I didn't even think about
    it. Thank you very much. for sharing your story and a piece
    of your life. It is a huge one.

    is my daughters 11th birthday. I promised today would be
    the day..... Funny thing is I have smoked since I was 11.
    Lord I am 37 and I have to do this. any suggestions?????

    I have tried, smoke away, will power, hypnotherapy, zyban,
    all that I feel is left is the padded room!

    I smoked for 27 (started at age 12) years, 2+ packs a day
    towards the end. It was one of my favorite activities! Two
    things that helped me to quit. Pregnancy and hypotherapy.
    Obviously neither of those things worked for you. You
    might try the hypotherapy one more time. I was told that
    it wouldn't work unless you *really* wanted to quit. Well,
    I didn't want to quit and still wish I could smoke. That's
    how much I liked it! And yet it worked like a charm for
    me. I did light one more cigarette after the hypnotherapy.
    The man doing it said that for most people the effect
    wasn't immediate. I took a few puffs on that cigarette and
    put it out carefully, relighting it throughout the day.
    The next day, I awoke and didn't smoke. Nor did I feel the
    need to. Oh, I wanted to. But didn't need to.

    It might also have helped that I managed to cut way back
    in the two or three weeks before the hypnotherapy. I was
    smoking those really skinny cigarettes and allowed myself
    only one puff at a time. If you find this too hard to do,
    you might try some of those expensive, fancy ones with the
    colored papers. Not sure if you can buy them in a store,
    but they can be mail ordered. I got some of those once as
    a gift. They have nothing but pure tobacco and no
    additives in them so they go out very quickly and need to
    be relit. Good luck! I know how hard quitting can be!
