I'm about to replace my knackered Nexave 24 spd chainset & cassette and have decided to go for 27 spd. Obviously I know I'll need to replace the shifters & chain as well.
My quandry is that I want a chainset with a chainguard as there's no way I'm going back to getting laces & trousers caught up in the chainring like I used to on my previous bike (so don't bother calling me a girly as I know I am!). But no-one seems to sell a reasonable (say Deore) 9 spd chainset with a chainguard. Despite the fact that Shimano list it as an option.

Keep the chainset and replace the knackered rings? (is that possible?). Should work with 9speed ok.

Failing that, ask a Shimano dealer to order it. Failing that, tuck trousers in socks (or wear tight trousers!) and double-knot laces (or use velcro shoes) like the rest of us do.
Not pretty but how about an aftermarket chainguard - the plastic disc type ones that fit over the chainset?
LBS should be able to supply.
Though every bike shop I went to denied all knowledge of the existence of chain guards. In the end I had to grab one off their shelf and almost ram it down their throat before they'd admit to having one. Does the job tho, just. Best to still wear dark trousers if you've just oiled the chain tho.

Won't help with your laces, but just haul up your R trouser leg a wee bit is enough to stop oiling your breeks IME.
