  1. Hi All,

Here is a GPS generated profile for 5km of a 10km out-and-back time
    trial that my club uses:

    http://www.arbitrary.org/5km.JPG

Is this a "flat" course? I like to kid myself that if it were truely
flat I would do much better. So by general time-trial standards, is
this course considered flat and I am deluding myself, or is it actually
pretty non-flat for a "flat" time trial? This course is as flat as it
gets around here so this is all hypothetical.

    Dear Joseph,

The steepest part of your ride appears to be about 5 meters in 0.5 km,
right in the middle of the graph at 2.5 km.

    That's about a 1% grade.

    http://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm

For 500 meters, the defaults with 250 watts, hands-on-drops, this
    calculator predicts:

    grade kmh sec sec
    -1.0% 42.1 42.8 -5.5
    -0.5% 39.7 45.3 -3.0
    0.0% 37.3 48.3 -
    0.5% 34.9 51.6 +3.3
    1.0% 32.5 55.4 +7.1

Since you ride the same route in reverse, the downhill gains should
cancel out some (but not all) of the uphill losses--going both ways on
the 1% grade loses about 1.6 seconds.

Ordinary wind variations should swamp such minor differences. Same
settings, 0% grade, winds "gusting" from 3 to 6 mph:

    kmh
    wind kmh sec sec
    -10 43.7 41.2 -6.1
    -5 40.4 44.6 -2.7
    0 37.3 47.3 -
    +5 34.3 52.5 +5.2
    +10 31.4 57.3 +10.0

A paltry 5 kmh wind loses 2.5 seconds, out and back.

    Cheers,

    Carl Fogel

Yeah that is really flat by what is around my area. I haven't found anything
that flat around my area so far. Although doing multiple laps through an
    industrial park comes close.
But if you move down to Florida maybe near Miami or something, that is flat.
Riders get excited with the freeway overpasses down there.
Along the gulf coast near the Gulf of Mexico it is really flat too.
Maybe in the Midwest like Kansas or something similar would be good too.

If I read you correctly, you want an out and back course that's downhill
    both ways, right ?

Actually, there is one. Monaco. From Jardin exotique to the beach club,
then back along the shore to Fontvielle. Use the elevators to reach the the
    starting point.

I'm in Tampa and it's pretty well dead flat on this side of the sandbar. There's
a ramped overpass on one of the local rail to trails that I've named "my little
interval;" 30 whole seconds of sustained climbing.

The most climbing I've seen is an urban mountain bike race that goes up the ramp
of a five story parking garage. That's it.

I've ridden a road in that comes close. It's a piece of road in Eastern
Oregon that's about ten miles long, dead straight, and *seems*
    perfectly level..

I've looked at topographic maps of the area and there might be 20 feet
altitude difference on the straight stretch. If anybody wants to go and
look, it's called Crane-Buchanan Road, heading north from the town of
    Crane
(and it ends in Buchanan- go figure). Crane is within a mile of the
southern end of the straight stretch, but it's no metropolis- I think
    the
permanent population is a couple hundred. It's also above 4000 feet
    altitude.

Crane also has a public boarding high school- one of the few (perhaps
    only)
in the U.S. They hosted the travelling city the is Cycle Oregon 14 with
    ease.

Plenty of horses in the area, too, including the Kiger mustangs.
