I just had a 2004 Giant XTC 4 delivered from Parkers of Bolton for £420. Hydraulic disk brakes, nice
frame etc. Pretty good value for money I reckon. Means I'll be back on the road as of tomorrow - no
more tube :-)

Nowt wrong with it. You could look at umpteen bikes at the same price from reputable manufactures
and have a heck of a decision to make over minor differences. If you don't want to mess about go for
it, Trek are generally good bikes. Expect the rear hub to [censored] out before 2 years if you do a lot of
wet, off-road riding and possibly a similar fate for the headset, but that applies to all bikes at
that price point.

It's got unfeasibly low gears - if you need 22 x 32 to get up a hill you'll fall off the back!

I happily use 24x34 (would consider lower on the front but the chainset won't go any smaller) off
road and 24x32 on road.

If I fell off the back my wife might complain though...

The Rockshox Judy TT is a pretty atrocious fork. The good side is that it's cheap and needs little
maintenance. The bad side is that it sticks, the travel is poor, it's not smooth, the elastomers
don't work in cold weather, the spring response is not progressive, it's heavy... See <URL:

Although you won't get anything much else at this price point.If used for commuting on road, its
lack of maintenance requirements might be an asset. The OP might consider saving a few quid and
getting a rigid version of an equivalent bike at this pricepoint. MBR's last annual test on bikes in
this pricerange came to the conclusion there was very little in it, so price/brand/size may as well
decide, as they're pretty much all the same.

Yes, I've seen them, well pictures of them anyway. The disc brake forces acting on the lower arm are
supposed to resist dive, IIRC, which sounds like a good thing.

When/if you get half a pair of them post a report.
