Decent Intro Level Road Shoe?

I was thinking of spending int the 100.00 dollar range...

I just bought some new shoes, tried on Specialized,Nike,Diadorra, & Northwave. I ended up buyting the nikes because I have a narrow foot but the widest shoe by far IMO was the specialized line,very nice shoes,goodline for beginners all the way to pros,easy to walk in which is nice when your new to waling with cleats on and reasonably priced.

Pedals should work fine,just get the right cleats when you buy the shoes, get the ones with float, not fixed.

Thanks, you were right! I went to a local store and Specialized seemed the best fit in the regular width. Unfortunately they were close to 200.00 CND so I passed for today.

I might do a little more online searching before I order. Thanks for the reply!

Sidi Radian are good entry level shoes.

Specialized makes an entry level road shoe that you can get for less than 100 dollars. They have three velcro straps and are not as light as their 200 dollar shoes, but they have all of the same arch support. they will fit like the more expensive pair, but you do not get all of the bells and whistles you get with the more expensive pair. I am the type of rider who rides to stay in shape and they have never given me any problems. Lake also makes a wide shoe, but I think the specialized are a much better value. Bicycling rated them as very good shoes, and actually mentioned the Specialized. Pick up last months bicycling. They have an article on everything you need and give you three different choices based on how much money you want to spend. Also get a helmet. Their is a discussion on why wear a helmet because you do not wear one when walking and if a car hits you you will die anyway. The answer is helmets are not to prevent injury from cars, they are made to prevent injuries from when you fall off your bike. And everyone no matter how good you are will fall off. Just look at how many riders had to abandon the tour this year from injuries caused by falling off their bikes.

About two years ago I found a pair of these

Vittoria carbon-sole, reg. $200+, from trashbar for only $150. Look for closeouts. I need a wide shoe as well, and as long as you don't crank the [censored] out of the straps, they are a great shoe. I've worn Northwave (still do for mtn bike), Gaerne, shimano, etc, and I like this pair the best, although it is soon time to get a new pair 😄

I don't remember the actual model, but I got a pair of SIDI's on Ebay that were hardly used at all for $50. The MSRP for them off of SIDI's site I believe is $150. There are quite a few pairs of good slightly used shoes on Ebay that are a great buy.

They have shoes starting less than $100- US and up. Check out their website and buy direct if you know your size.

These are the ones I got last week. Shimano R151 They have a wide toe box. They are over your budget, but they have a full carbon sole.

Going to a bike store near me today infact. I'm also in need of shoes. I didn't want to spend too much and I also have wide feet. My new to me old bike should be arriving 7/31. It has look pedals. If I should find something of interest I'll post it up...

I'm in the market also, I tried on the new Nike 10-2, they fit so nice, but they were well over $200.

For me shoes have to be tried on, the nikes i fit perfect into a 45 but some of the other shoes i fit into a 44.5, My question is if you buy them on the internet, especially ebay, how do you know they are going to fit? I would assume you go to a store and try them on and order that specific shoe. Somewhat of a newbie question, but $200 for a pair of road shoes is just way out of my budget.

Well no luck so far here. The biggest the store had were 46 both Nike and Shimano brand lines. Tight length wise and painfull width wise. I'm guessing maybe a 49 and something wider.

My point was that Ebay has a fairly decent selection of good used shoes. Me buying SIDI's for a good price was just an example.

I have a pair of Shimano R-A80 I picked up on sale at Performance that have been great so far. List is $75.

SIDI makes two widths in most of their models. The ones labeled "Mega" are wide. The Sidi Zeta - Mega is $149.99 US at Performance.

Shoes are one of the things I will not buy on-line unless I am replacing a pair that I have had before. I, too, have a wide foot and found that the Northwave and Forte (Performance's house brand) shoes are much wider than Shimano, Pearl Izumi, Diadora, Adidas, or Vittoria.

I found a nice pair of shoes that fit me. It was a shimano something or other. Man I can't remember the model off hand.😕 It was a road shoe, 47 was the size, Look compatable and the cost was $80 US. It fit pretty well on my wide feet. On the box it said 12.5 US size. I'm normally a size 11. I most likely am buying them tomorrow. So I'll have the model then to.

You might try to find a pair of Pearl Izumi Vagabond M3 (for spd pedals) to try on. I was pleasantly surprised. My shoe travails: 1st Shimano - too narrow - problems on a long ride. Sidi $229.US squeaked like crazy (sold them on ebay) Tried Adidas $189. they were cut too high on the side and hurt my ankle bone after awhile. Tried a different model 3 strap Sidi $149. worked fine for about 3 months then started squeaking - drove me crazy. Found the Pearl Izumi $84.95 - by far the best shoes yet for me - walk great, comfortable, look good. YMMV.

I can also recommend these shimanos. I got mine at the local Performance Bike shop 3 weeks ago, but online, they should be a decent price too. I'm an 11 1/2 D or E and the euro size 45 fit me with plenty of width room and that is even with the molded toe that the front has. After discounts I got mine for under $70 USD.
