decathlon btwin

Generally Decathlon bikes seem very good value. Just check that the lowest
gear is low enough. Have a look at the Triban 5 also, has a maintaince free
hub gear.

the bike for a daily 8 mile (round trip) commute, mostly on busy main
roads, a lot of it uphill.

I'd be greatful if people could mention any specific cavetas with the
Btwin or suggest what questions I should ask that arent answered on their
website

Anyone reasonably fit should be able to manage a 4 mile ride, twice a
day. On a round trip, every single one of those uphills will be
balanced by a downhill. It just won't feel like it :-)

What on earth does "42/13 steel triple chainwheel pedal crank" mean?
You might want to ask about the weight. It looks heavy, and if you have
a lot of uphill that isn't going to help. TBH, something like the
Ridgeback Rapide Motion might suit you. Same price, but you have to add
on mudguards, lights and rack.

Finally, have you actually been into your LBS (local bike shop) and
discussed what you need with them? They will be in a better position to
advise. As much as you like the Decathlon Btwin, you might find that it
is simply the wrong shape for you when you get on it. The websites
seemed lacking on frame dimensions, but even if the info was there,
nothing beats actually sitting on the bike in the shop. Some bikes fit
you, and some don't.
